In order to make the text complete in itself, the first part is devoted to a summary of those aspects of thermodynamics that are required for further study of the subject. The second part deals with the fundamentals of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, and the final section with specific examples of the application of the thermodynamic formalism
This book was used for one of my Biophysics classes from my undergraduate days at Berkeley. Biological systems must maintain a steady-state thermodynamic non-equilibric balance to allow chemical processes to function. Hence, we have the Biophysicist's definition of death -- Reaching Equilibrium.
