This the 4th book in the series was a bit of a surprise as I was all geared up to find out what happened to Avalon and her sister, but instead this book takes us back to a time where it all started going wrong and where the Government started its centralisation tactics! The story mainly focuses on Mitch and his family but it fills in many necessary details which had been missing so far in the larger picture. We get to see who suffered first when the environment started being decimated. The small farming community of Macron whose soil was depleted, who felt the water shortage first, who start to realise that the birds and insects have disappeared, particularly the much needed pollinators. With no fruit and vegetables and no crops the cattle farms were next to go, and industrial plants started closing down, jobs were lost and soon people were forced to sell their properties and move to the cities in the hope of a better future! Government started buying them out and tightening the screws, yet those who realised what was going on were labelled conspiracy theorists. people were scared so did not want to hear the worst, so they believed that centralisation was good and important so that resources would be available to everyone and distribution of goods would be fair and equitable and everyone would be taken care of, because that is what governments do!! People needed to wake up, to fight the monster doing this to them rather than each other and Mitch decides to join the police force to help his community and this is how we know the Mitch in the first three books but what now? This book leaves us hanging on after book 3 and we really need to know how our two heroic sisters are faring! So I do hope we do not have too long to wait for the next book in this amazing series!
