You know, I was really enjoying this book until she got all smug and superior in her writing. She feels she’s one of the few people who could live the way she did for a decade. I would love to know why she left the Cascades for a sweet life on an island urban oasis. I also wish this scion covered how she paid for the place she stayed at or if she was squatting the entire time.
The theory is she originally wrote this under a male pseudonym as no one would believe her story otherwise. In all reality, she gave herself away - from the first chapter it was obvious a woman was writing.
River for My Sidewalk is a beautiful recounting of how practicing mindfulness in nature can be so grounding and Introspective. It is realistic and some how romantic how Gilean recounts her time living in the mountains and how she interacts with the wild. This book is a true gem, and a great reminder of what we can be capable of.
