Steppenwolf, Hermann Hesse's post WWI novel is a fascinating re-read. I just finished reading a new translation by David Horrocks. I loved the novel as a teenager, but as an adult I learned much from Hesse's wisdom.

There are so many things the author addresses about approaching life in his novel that I think everyone should read it. For example many family or national cultures expect one to be independent ... independence as a value rather than interdependence. That surely is good, but what happens when one becomes so independent they don't need anyone, or think they don't need anyone?

That question is one of many addressed in this remarkably current novel.
