‘While she painted, the artist told me about my dog breed (Maltese)’
Darcy Pattison is an Arkansas children's book author and writing teacher. In 1999, she created the Novel Revision Retreat, which she now teaches across the nation. As a children's book author her books have been translated into nine languages, and have been recognized for excellence by starred reviews, Book of the Year awards, state award lists and more. She is the 2007 recipient of the Arkansas Governor's Arts Award for Individual Artist for her work in children's literature.
In MY DIRTY DOG Darcy is joined by illustrator Ewa O'Neill is a story that take the reader through the decision making process and aspects of writing about a dog. She introduces cousins Mellie and Dennis again. Mellie’s class assignment is to write about a subject and the essay must be written well and be informative. Mellie decides to write about her beloved dog. Throughout the course of Mellie’s assignment we learn about the term canine, and K-9 and everything is incorporated into Mellie’s essay experience. Or as the synopsis states, ‘When the family gathers for Grandma’s birthday, they spend the day at the local K-9 Karnival. Cousins Dennis and Mellie get their faces painted, learn how to give a dog a bath, and march in a parade. At home, they write informative essays about the day. Two full mentor essays included. With the homework done, it’s time for Grandma’s birthday party! This is Book 4 in The Read and Write Series, that feature these cousins, their pets and great essays. who decide to get a dog and in the most ingratiating manner she takes us through the reasons each of the children wants a particular kind of dog and why. Mellie wants a tiny dog who can also be a jogger and Dennis want a couch potato dog who like to play. Through their thoughts and choices we learn about the dog personalities and the importance of selecting a dog that fits into a child's and a family's life. As the title suggests, Dennis writes and essay for his teacher about his choices.’
What Darcy accomplishes in this completely fascinating (and beautifully illustrated and designed) book is not only a lot about the various varieties of dogs but also some solid instructions about how to assist children in writing about dogs. Excellent book for families.

This picture book is a how-to book for elementary kids. However, I have used it with my middle school kids who just could not get the concept of writing an informative essay. The author uses two young kids and their dogs to create a scene from which they will write an informative essay. What I liked best about this book was at the very end she gives instructions for the steps in writing an informative essay.
