Patrick Price-Johnson is on remand for the murder and assault of a woman priest. His story begins with a mundane article for a local newspaper, but when his girlfriend Julia gets involved the stakes are raised. Patrick finds himself manipulated into a piece of literary detective work about the midrash that will uncover a Church of England sex scandal. Or so he thinks. In a journey that drags him through fear, hypocrisy and despair to the darker side of love and faith, he wonders if unrequited love is the only love that lasts.
Quite a dazzling and wonderfully blasphemous and electric, contemporary literary work that shines with touching clarity, not to mention achingly subtle violence, tender realism and tremendous and earthy dialogue. A young man narrates from prison through ignored letters to the girlfriend he left behind the steps and incidents that led to his encounter with a dead female priest, whilst extracts from her own memoir, dealing heavily with scripture and the myth and tales of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. It's quite the stunning reflection of modern day prison life with quite astounding male characterization from all backgrounds and cultures, delivered deftly and kindly and in the end gripping and shocking.
