Now, Charlie must take responsibility and learn how to clean up his dog's mess. What will Charlie do?

Young readers, especially those who have read the other books in the series, know about Charlie's dog, Pickles. In this story, Pickles gets into the neighbor's yard and ends up digging up some cucumbers. His neighbor is understanding and tell's Charlie not to worry about it, but Charlie steps up to make things right. The moral of the story is to do the right thing, and I enjoyed the life lessons related to accountability it entails. I think young readers will enjoy the tale and it provides a backdrop for parental teaching which is a bonus.

Charlie Tractor and the Garden
(children's book, realistic fiction, animal story, gardening, community)

Charlie Tractor and the Garden by Katie and Carrie Weyler is a delightful story about a boy and his dog. (I love these kinds of stories!) Charlie takes his dog Pickles for a walk one day and Pickles breaks free of his leash. Pickles runs into a neighbor's garden and digs it up.

This is a feel-good story about right and wrong and making amends... Pickles did something wrong by digging up the neighbor's garden and Charlie was a good neighbor by replacing the plants and helping his neighbor plant them in the garden.

If you are a teacher, Charlie Tractor and the Garden would be a good book for your language arts lessons about realistic fiction, story elements, and making connections. It would also be a good book for your science lessons about planting seeds and identifying fruits and vegetables.

Best for elementary students. Whole group, small group, and independent reading.

The Joys of Gardening and Doing the Right Thing!

Sometimes there is no better way of learning something new and important than by observing what happens in our own backyard!

This is a poignant story about a young boy who does the right thing after his playful puppy digs out his neighbor’s freshly planted vegetable garden.

Featuring simple text and bright illustrations, the story captures believable and relatable moments in our daily lives.

A wonderful book for a parent and a child to enjoy together. Highly recommended!
