4.55 stars - pg13/mild r-lite (no details, but reference to mistresses, the "marriage bed" and an engaged couple slept together before marriage --- also the Lord's name as an exclamation/curse one or two times "G__ d__")
Mysteries, villains, stolen sapphires, conniving lady next door, great characters and clever dialogue. Quite engaging story and nicely descriptive (I could almost "feel" the settings).
Oh my gosh I loved the witty, sparkling, nasty sniping between the intelligent Hero and heroine. They start off bad and keep going at it....great tension. Too funny. I loved them both. She's the first to realize that all the sparring, strong emotions and flare of anger between them is really the spark of love (at least on her part).
There were a few minor things that didn't quite fit (like a poem written in 1823 being quoted in this 1817 story, etc.). Plus at one point the sharp, astute heroine blindly falls for the villain's sob story. (Why??!!?) But I was easily able to overlook most of this. The story is quite fast-paced, yet the last chapters seem to slow down and get a tad bit wonky. Still... it's easy to overlook when we get to our HEA ending.
I could not put this book down. So far this is the best Sandra Heath novel I've read. I've looked for other good regency romances by her, but many of her books have paranormal aspects so I finally gave up looking.
