The Land of the Living book series continues with book 2 titled "LAND OF DEATH AND DESTINY." A great continuation of the story. I recommend reading this book right after you finish the first installment, Land of the Living, while the memories are still fresh. If not, I recommend re-reading the first book so you that you can smoothly transition into this one.
Land of Death and Destiny picked up right away and since there was no "recap as we go" I was a little lost at first while I refamiliarized myself with the characters and what had already happened.
The bulk of the book follows James Creed in 1944 but we get some occasional visits to his some Michael in 2035, I absolutely loved the time spent in the future and felt it wasn't enough but I know that there will be more in the next installment.
Whenever you think that it's getting predictable, James Creed will use his ability to change things, it kept me on my toes until the last page.
If you are a fan of the TV show "Travelers", this is a good series to read while you wait for the new season to come out.

I was given a free review copy of this audio book, at my request, and am voluntarily leaving this unbiased review.
This book shows the growth of the authors writing skills. The first book was fun and a little campy, but had some problems with dialog and plot. This book, on the other hand, has dropped the camp, is a little less fun, but is has a better planned plot and more realistic dialog.
This book is such an evolution from the first book. The dialog has been cleaned up, and this like "my son" have been dropped. People speak in a more natural way and the conversations have a better flow to them. Some of the romantic exchanges are still a little awkward, but much less so than the first book.
This book has also dropped the nostalgia factor, that was heavy in the first. Book 1 was full of 80's references, and 80's mussel cars and celebrities. This book primarily takes place in the 40's and all the nostalgia has been dropped. Cars are just "40's Ford," etc. No celebrities, no overt references or music or anything like that.
Rather than take away from the story, this elevates the story. The story stands on its own, and doesn't use these things as a crutch. It was a welcome change.
The characters in this book are interesting. Some recurring characters are back, like John, Sarah, and the Red Headed woman. Some new characters are added, more relatives, and new super beings. None of the characters are shoe horned in, and while some are a little unnaturally connected, none feel fake.
The main setting of 1944 is done well, with a few minor issues, like the use of t-shirts (which were underwear at the time) and how the cars were referred to as "old 40s model", when in 44, they could only be a max of 4 years old, and therefore not "old". These things are very minor and really don't affect the story, though.
The story this time is more focused and streamlined. The main character spends almost the entire book in 1944, leaning his new powers and trying to solve the circus fire. This allows the story to stay on track and avoid some of the plot holes from the first. Having said that, some of the rules from the first book have been forgotten, like the "windows". I'll be interested to see how this will play out in book 3.
Similarly, the narrator Johnny Mack, was much better this time. His voices were more consistent, he delivered the dialog more convincingly, and just generally did a much better job.
All in all, a better written book than the first. The story is more focused, the dialog more natural, the narrator does a better job. It's not as "fun" as the first, but the higher quality of the story makes the experience more enjoyable. However, there isn't much in the way of refreshers from book 1, so reading 1 and 2 close together would lead to a better experience, imo.
I look forward to reading book 3.

Book two picks up where one left off in 1944. There is a brief recap in the prologue so that does help refresh the noggin. If not, you can always go back to the last couple chapters of one. The story is a bit complex with the jumping from 1944 to 1985 to 2035, but the plot is quite interesting and laid out quite well. The comments on 1944 were the most interesting to me. James Creed noticed that people were “all dressed up” and were “very friendly”. I wondered if this might be true. I’m from the 50’s and 60’s and I believe things were less complex and friendlier, so it figures that the 40’s may have been even better. I know there is at least one more book which may cover the 2035 future. I look forward to finding out what we have in store for us. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

An exciting time travel story! Starting out with a quick recap of the first book, James Pinard makes sure we’re all up to speed on what’s going on since this book picks up right where the first left off.
Traveling back and forth between 1944 and 1985, James Creed is trying to reset the timeline to what it’s supposed to be by saving those who were not meant to die at the time. He’s met with obstacles every step of the way!
Johnny Mack’s narration once again drew me right in. A fantastic job.

I gave this book 4.2 stars.
I still love the characters, the world and the logic in this second installment of the series.
I was expecting more suspense, which is why it did not end up with 5 stars as I had predicted.
Here you have two different stories happening in parallel; Michael's and James's. It also reveals many questions left open in the first book and leaves you wanting to read the third and last volume of this trilogy as soon as possible.
I would highly recommend to continue with this series.

Audible:Book 2 in the series picks up where number 1 left off.Looking for a boy ,his grandfather,to save fro the circus fire,Luke runs into many more issues.Friends will be found to be foes and vice verce.Good story.Confusing at times.Johnny Mack was a good narrator.I was given this book by the narrator,author or publisher free for an honest review.
