The story of Mary Donoho who was the first woman to survive the rugged and grueling crossing of the Santa Fe Trail in 1832. Mary Donoho's life lives up to the image of the undaunted pioneer woman of the past.
I found this book to be interesting and well written. Although the book was written to showcase a pioneer of the Santa Fe trail, much of book takes place in Texas. The subject, Mary Donaho, spent a good portion of her life in Texas as a hotelier. It was fascinating to learn about life in Texas in the 19th Century. There were also some side stories, such as those regarding women who were abducted by Comanche Indians and rescued by Mary Donaho's husband, which were engrossing and would make great novel or movie adaptations. I would recommend this book to those interested in Texas history as well as the Santa Fe Trail.
This book takes a look at Mary Donoho believed by the finds presented in the book to be the actual first woman on the Santa Fe Trail . There is lots of history here, but seems more like a report than a historical account as I was looking for .
