About the author

Robert Alexander Clarke Parker was a British historian, specialising in British appeasement of Nazi Germany and the Second World War. Parker was a lecturer in history at the University of Manchester from 1952 to 1957, when he became a Fellow in Modern History at The Queen's College, Oxford until his retirement in 1997.

This is a difficult time period to cover. While the tables and statistics are good, with no explanation of how to read them, it's hard to really understand their significance. Like most histories of this era, the focus is on the USA, France, Germany, and England, though there are some mentions of Italy and Scandinavia and Central/Eastern Europe. The read is a bit dry, and I found the more recent work A History in Fragments a more compelling and engaging read.
