This book was a huge disappointment when I was a child. I think it must have been the burgeoning authenticity cop in me. Although it had black-and-white photos of some beautiful artworks in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the costumes it gave instructions for were nothing like them. They were simple, crude things children could make without much difficulty but which were very unconvincing. It was like being shown the Mona Lisa, and then handed a paint-by-number of Dora the Explorer.

I am giving this book three stars, which is more than I'd like to. But I have to be fair and say for simple, easy costumery kids can make which will satisfy the needs for basic play and pageantry, it's pretty good.

It's just, well, I was the sort of child who liked handsewing her own homespun linsey-woolsey gown.
