To the tradesman carpentry refers to the constructional woodwork of a house-the roof, flooring, and so on. To the man in the street, however, it generally means the making of almost every thing in wood; hence the general character of the designs we give. We give a range of comparatively simple designs for objects to make which we know from experience to be in everyday demand; small general items, pieces of furniture, and garden woodwork. These are followed by instructions on the use of tools, and the everyday processes involved in woodwork-making doors, hinging, fitting locks, and cutting joints.
