Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903 "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit". In God's way was written in 1889 and it was one of the few works of this author that I could actually find printed. It's quite amazing when you think of this massive amount of time.
As the title suggests, it's a deeply religious novel, but not as harshly moralizing as I expected. Which was good, because I was interested more in the writing than the message.
The story is quite minimalist following the life choices of two siblings, boy and girl, and of another boy. Their paths are dominated by either accepting religion or denying it.
Interesting to me was that the structure was less important than the form of the story. You could tell that the shapes and combinations of words had a higher priority than the grand message and that led to a heaviness of the text. I wish I would have been able to read it in Norwegian, but happy as it is too.
Always interesting to read something different, to see distant societies and customs, and experience novelty by going back in time like this.

Ühest küljest hea skandinaavia klassikalise romaani näide, teisest küljest ei pruugi mitte kõik selle romaani konfliktid enam tänapäeva inimese jaoks väga kõnekad olla. Kindlasti soovitan raamatud neile, kel mingi suhe kristlusega, sest romaani põhiküsimuseks võiks pidada mõtet "Kes ikkagi on õige kristlane?"
