Dead-eye gunplay, shifty alliances, and hard-bitten Texans push this Western above rub-of-the-mill. Dean wroter better ones, but this one rocks pretty well on its own. Mexico plays a big role since it's set on the border. Kelly Boyle, the main character, is well-drawn and likeable to cheer for. Only drawback is a plot that meanders a bit here and there, for me. But I'll look for others in this author's saddlebags.
