Basic Plot: Kai Lan goes to China to meet a baby panda.
This book was frustrating for me on many levels. The first, of course, being that I do not speak Chinese and find its pronunciations to be difficult. I was further annoyed when I soldiered through the book, haplessly mangling words in Chinese only to find the pronunciation guide at the end of the book. Because it's SO logical to put the help in the back where the parent is less likely to find it. *grrrrrrrr*
While I'm fascinated by Chinese culture (and Chinese food, mustn't forget that), the Kai Lan books and TV show seem extremely watered down to me. Yes, they're intended for pre-schoolers, but I feel they are lacking and heavily Western-influenced. Maybe I'm just weird.
About the only thing I really liked about the book was its message. In this case, the book was about trying new things because you might like them. My son has real issues with trying new things, so any time I can reinforce the idea that new does not equal bad, I do.
