This work could easily have been split into two separate books since its chapters tell two different kinds of stories: examinations of the Manhattan Underworld and the legal battles of the Howe and Hummel law firm. The former were more interesting for me but each was enjoyable. Whoever actually wrote this book, Howe, Hummel, or both, did a good job with the narrative. It reads very smoothly for a work that's approaching 150 years of age. There are a few dry spots and the occasional moments of Dickensian treacly sentiment, but with plenty of pithy worldly wise observations as well. The frequent use of apt quotes is another plus. The book is somewhat disjointed in its presentation with surprisingly little overlap between the Court cases and the trips through the New York Bad Lands but I still consider it recommended reading.
