Spirit Animals: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Animals Companions

Rate this book
Long ago, many cultures regarded certain animals as reflecting a person's true essence, as a link between this world and the spiritual realm. Today, this cosmic connection has become a cultural touchstone for a new generation. This illuminating book explains how to connect with and channel the unique powers of 40 different spirit animals. Featuring a menagerie of creatures from the wise owl and crafty fox to the tranquil turtle and bold lion each entry provides a detailed description of the animal's personality, mythology, and innate powers. Helpful text provides readers with clues and meditations for discovering their own spirit animal as well as information on how other animals can be called on to help with specific desires from overcoming fear to finding true love. Lavishly illustrated by a collection of cutting-edge artists, this book is the perfect primer for those seeking access to the primal wisdom of the animal kingdom.

Although it does fail to include Otters, Hedgehogs, Prince, and Short Shorts as valid spirit animals fear not- Mini Elephants are included in this little guide to spirit animals. Each animal is illustrated by super hip artists like Kyle Field, Lisa Congdon, Grady McFerrin, Julie Morstad, Rachel Salomon etc. So far I have just been using this book to tell co-workers that they are the Prosperous Risk-Taker/Kangaroo or the Fierce Femine/Crab but I think it has endless potential (and not just to annoy those lucky enough to work with me).

Confession: surfing Chronicle Books’s beautiful new additions to our library put me in touch with my California-hippie side this week. I have a not-so-secret affinity for personality types and classifications — the zodiac, Meyer-Briggs, and, most recently, spirit animals. (In case you’re wondering, I’m a Sagittarian INFJ Wolf, natch.)

But rather than answering the more common question, “Who (or what) am I?,” this book answers the question “Who or what can help me right now?,” offering animal guides as spiritual medicine for every state of being. I tore through the whole book in an hour, devouring the author’s pithy descriptions and the accompanying artwork as if they were a pint of Neapolitan ice cream (but better), and finished hoping to bring some of the deer, the dog, the butterfly & the elephant into my life.

One to keep like one keeps an encyclopedia or medical dictionary. Future references whenever a wild animal repeatedly steps into your life.
