Anyone who calls themselves a Goan should read this book. A gift from my mother in 1985 I read it then (1985) briefly but it never sank in until I re-read it now (2020), in my retirement years as a diasporic Goan (born in Goa, but lived outside all my life). An outstanding book, fascinating history through 400 years of western influence, yet without bias and written with a flair and articulation that is simply amazing for a non-Englishman. The artistic rendering of Mario de Miranda is so passionately nostalgic and captures the beauty of Goa. It made me proud to be a Goan.
