People are dying. Ostensibly, it is a group of black people killing whites. But in fact, it is a group of Neo Nazis killing anyone with colored skin, or who is a Jew.
Sons of the American Fatherland, by H. Berkeley Rourke, is more contemporary realism, than contemporary fiction. A book, written in documentary style, which tells the story of Jonas, an American-born son of a proud loyalist to the Third Reich and Hitler’s Nazi movement. Jonas is taught to regard Jews and people of color as sub-human, anyone who is not Aryan and pure. By the age of 20 he is involved in neo-Nazi and white supremacist violence, and over the course of the following years, he builds his group, Sons of the American Fatherland, into a hate group which unleashes brutal and senseless killings around the nation, designed to incite hate and a civil war between those it targets. This is a dark read, filled with violence, revealing the ugly and inhumane aspect of those who objectify and regard other human beings as less than themselves. It reminds us that even though the Third Reich died in World War II, its message of hate and discrimination and inhumanity is still with us today, threaded in the weave of our culture. Humbly, the author prefaces the story, saying that it does not reflect his views whatsoever, and that it was not a book he enjoyed writing, but the necessity to spotlight the issue prevailed. Sons of the American Fatherland reminds us of the need to remain focused on what truly matters in the world, our humanity and treating people with equality and respect – because in the end, no one, except the most decrepit and sick individuals, would want to be a neo-Nazi like “Jonas”. Steel yourself for a shocking read – one which certainly reflects no part of the “American dream”.
First I should say how important I think this book is. Hatred is a terrible thing and one spark can easily blow into an all out wild fire if not stopped. The author shows a lot of strength and courage by sitting down and putting on paper the ideas in this book. I believe and hope with all my heart that our world has more people who promote love than those who promote hate, but hope all will see that if we don't pay attention to the atrocities and the past and those we see in the present, they will never be stopped. The author tells this story beginning with two men, Jonas Schmidt and Jeremy Korchak who truly believe those who are not white and of the right background should die. They also know that they can kill people and easily blame it on another group because of the divisions in the country. As more people join in with the group named "The Sons" their grand plan begins. The author has taken a timely subject and written a spell binding tale. Some people will deny the truth in this book, but I hope others will see what it is so important to believe what they read, and yes, what they see and not let hatred become a viable option to any.
"Sons of the American Fatherland" by H. Berkeley Rourke, is a fictional account of right wing extremism in America. The story reflects the underlying bigotry and hate that exists today, and perhaps, through history in this country. The research is compelling, the outcome is frightening. The outcome is a warning worth considering. Read this book if you are concerned with the division we face today, and ask yourself if we want this to be the American Legacy.
Fact: According to the SPLC there are more black hate groups than white hate groups. Yet.....when a book is written about a hate group it is always ALWAYS about neo-Nazi, white supremacists. Why? Is it politically incorrect to say blacks are racist? That said.... Enjoyed the book. Well written. Great character development. Just a really good read.
