My daughter and I met Rob and he gave us a copy of his book. What an inspirational book, no frills, just bare bones of what is was like for them both on the boat, and written with his sense of humour evident throughout. Was a privilege to meet him and spend time with him. A great kiwi that makes one proud to be one also.

This book was written in 99-2000 based on the Oct. 1997 Woodvale Challenge Atlantic rowing "race". Although only 10 years ago, there have now been several of these events and several accompanying books.
This book covers fund raising and it covers aspects of boat construction more so than later books do. It focuses heavily on personal relations between the two rowers - a lot of tension. Rob Hamill, the author exhibited a great deal of brash enthusiasm, and approached the event as a race, more than any other rower I've read about, except for one of the originals, John Ridgway. It also focuses very heavily on the race aspects of what is normally regarded as an endurance 'just-participate-and-complete' event. The strict rowing regime, lack of sleep and extreme weight (total boat weight minimization) are given a lot of focus. In contrast, most other books about an ocean row focus on the weather setbacks, physical tribulations, isolation, and the worry of running short of food and water.
Since this event occurred at the advent of the general population's use explosion of the internet, the author, Rob Hamill, missed the opportunity to maintain a social web of followers who might get updated daily via the internet through a blog site and via audio and video podcasts.
At this point in time they, Rob Hamill and PhilStubbs, made minimal use of a line-of-site VHF radio and only carried the required satellite boat tracker and an EPIRB. Now, more contemporary authors make use of solar chargers for IPODs, satellite phones, pc's, web and solid state video cams. Now it is more customary to maintain daily updates of their conditions and position so that interested followers and supporters become virtual participants. This allows for a more smooth transition to follow-up fund raising activities than what was described by Rob Hamill.
