This is a good general practical guidance on GDPR. It's not a textbook which would provide you with the historic developments of the data protection regulations, the respective context, etc. It represents practical analysis of the relevant provisions of the Regulation.
The shortcoming of the book is its lack of the relevant case law. The book was written before the GDPR came into force. And apparently, it could not reflect the cases examined after the Regulation had become effective. However, some of the GDPR provisions are the same or similar to the Directive 95/46/EC which was in place before the Regulation. And therefore, the analysis of the respective cases based on the previous Directive would be definitely helpful (as they still may be applicable).
Having said that, I have to mention that, besides just considering the specific GDPR provisions and requirements, the book does provide plenty of examples of how they should be applied or used in specific situations.
Another helpful tool is the juxtoposition of the Regulation's articles with the respective recitals given in the Annex (the text of the Regulation goes in the left column and the related Recitals are provided just opposite them in the right column) which makes it much easier to review them altogether.
I wouldn't call it an introductory text, but rather a helpful and useful guidebook that can be used for simpler and more standard cases. For more complex or difficult problems, I would rather refer to more substantial practitioner's books that cover the related case law and provide more in-depth analysis of the specific complex issues.
