Set in the context of lessons on popular media in a single high school classroom, this text shows that school pupils live in two separate worlds - those in and out of the school, with limited contact between the two. The author explores the day-to-day interactions between pupil and teacher, and how these can lead to a pupil's way of thinking and talking about mass media. The text identifies the struggle betweeen teacher and pupil on what is acceptable knowledge for classroom discussion, and also identifies that student knowledge gained outside the classroom, for example from the media, is discounted.
