The story line is that hallmark Rohan thing that debuted in the previous and unrelated book of his.
There are two parallel threads in the story - One, prankster duo looking for some instaRich bank swelling. Second, a smart yet middle class poor guy Naveen who owes scholarship favors from a local goon.
If you have read the blurb of it - well, you will follow what all I say.
If you have not - DON'T. Just don't read it. Instead go and read the story head first.
Let's dive in to one of my favorite reviews this year on Goodreads.
The character sketching is as immaculate as ever. The prankster duo is painted to the perfection of a french model and the book opening with their act is a piece that I cracked up hard. Naveen and Jessica are just not your average rom-com couples and the chemistry makes it believable for the readers of the horrors that are about to unravel.
Other characters like the Police Inspectors, glass eyed goons, the grand tycoon Zaveri and the fidgety tech savvy Dexter have been spot on.
Writing Style :
This is where the author takes the cup. The pieces on the chessboard are unraveled step by step like a grandmaster at work. The kidnapping is all a hoax set up by one of our Robinhood Romeo protagonist and it is all preplanned. No surprises - that is what he wants. But when there are hanging corpses, evil sounds and unplanned developments execute themselves, he knows he is in for a catch.
The windfall is not going to last and there has been back stabbing and double crossings all along the way. The characters fit into the design and the plot smoothens out the confusion that the writer intentionally builds up to the very end. And the humor laden, riots dialog delivery makes me reminisce my sweet ole' memories with one of the book of year 2016 for me 1000Kgs of Goa.
Plot Line :
The two plots go hand in hand. One small time horror movie with 4 first time close to amateurs and a kidnapping. An insider kidnapping. Love extremism at work. The roulette of blame transfers from character to character and even stops at you - are you the one who messed this simple criminal case up by skipping a page.
It all comes together in the high end. The vertigo subsides and the plot takes off. The anecdotes are placed evenly and the pace is what you expect from a 5 star thriller. Alternate subplots and recitals make the dart hit the bulls eye.
Still that god damn Battrecko!
Verdict : My money goes on to Rohan.
Well, not only the book MRP but I would be willing to sign this good a script writer.
You must have read a various type of love story where lovers do crazy things to gain love. The vibrant cover page of this book is totally alluring. After reading the blurb, I was sure this must be an amazing book. I would like to thank the book blogger Pratik as well as the author for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Set in the backdrop of Goa, the protagonist of this book is Naveen, a brilliant and intelligent guy. He was a bright student but his parents do not believe in his ability. By the support of Altaf Bhai, a powerful local goon he has completed his studies and now working in ‘Zaveri gems international’. Naveen has to pay back the financial support provided by Altaf Bhai in form of wealth of Zaveri. Naveen is restless and constantly thinks how can he pay back to Altaf Bhai.
On the other side, Kalpesh and Jackie are the friends who are trying to make a living out of creating prank videos. They want to make a video which can break the record of every prank video on youtube.
They decide to make a horror movie in the ‘Serenity Villa’ at Goa. They have instrumented everything when they have to stop their shooting and leave the villa and instrument behind.
Naveen is constantly trying to make any plan when he got the news that Zaveri’s daughter Jessica is going to be their new boss. Coincidentally this is the same Jessica who used to be his crush/love in college. The wicked minded Naveen made a plan to kidnap Jessica and to spend days with her he also asked to kidnap him. This is an unusual kidnapping where they were kept in the plush villa with all the amenities.
The fun point is this is the same villa where Kalpesh and Jackie have instrumented all the horror props. What happens next is something amusing to read.
Will Naveen able to gain a love of Jessica? When will Jessica be free? Will Jessica ever know the mastermind behind this plan? Read this book to know the answers.
My perception:
This book has every element; entertainment, romance, humor, mystery and a good story. I have noticed that the author has a unique way to write and this makes this book a very amazing read. The humor put by the author is laughable. The characters are wisely chosen by the author, Kalpesh, Jackie, Vikram, Shabbo, Naaz, Jessica, Naveen, Dexter each and every character played a vital role to develop the story. I thought this would be some simple humor book, but the unpredictable end makes it remarkable. I am longing to read the first book of the author. This book is a very good choice to put off your tired day with a cup of coffee. An entertaining book which you should not miss to read.
A nice plot which would make you engrossed with it from the beginning till the end. We would have used Oh My God(OMG) every now and then but for a change, this story is about Oh My Goddess!
I liked this way the story was conceived. It is an unusual story set up in an unusual way with some great twists. Trust me, you will never find as to who is the real culprit till the end and if you did, you are a genius.
The plot begins like this - Naveen completes his studies and in order to fulfil the favour extended to him for getting educated, he joins hands with Altaf Bhai who in turn had a connection with underworld don Sudhakar Shetty and joins Zaveri International Ltd where he meets his college days crush - Jessica and learns that she is none other than his boss's daughter.
On the other hand, Jackie and Kalpesh were into making some YouTube videos and wanted to make some quick bucks out of it. They did make some money but not as good as to support their living. They come up with a novel idea where they were sure about making a real big money and hires couple of artists.
Since they did video on real life incidents, they decided to get it shot in the Serenity Villa in Goa. It is at this place where Naveen and Jessica gets shifted after being kidnapped. Who kidnapped them and what happens in the story line which is coupled with some good twists involving cops and other characters.
The story has an unexpected ending but I presume it is good for the story because it is not the usual story you would have read earlier....
Oh My Goddess is Rohan's second book, and he enthralls with this as much as his first novel, a suspense caper also set in Goa, a state I'm fascinated with, for its quaint beaches, churches and basilicas, food, mixed Konkani and inherited Portuguese culture etc etc.
The suspense and drama is heightened in the book because there are two parallel narratives running together. Not only does the author very deftly handle both, which is very important in a novel with a complex plot like OMG, but there is plenty of scope for the characters in both narratives and their goals clashing- which is what happens- which makes the book even more interesting.
First is two young, bumbling, idealistic and kind-of-impractical men thinking of a get-rich-quick scheme by making funny, quirky videos of themselves doing the stupidest acts imaginable. Their shenanigans are hilarious, actually made me laugh out loud. The funniest part is when they try recruiting heroines for their full length feature film. Rohan is an author who can be funny without meaning to- the situations he creates have a laugh element of their own.
On the other hand, Naveen Joshi, middle class boy turned corporate professional, is in a fix, mostly due to choices he had made, and is going to make. On the one hand, he wants to pay back a man whose debt he's in, and he must commit a crime to do it or suffer greatly. On the other hand is his cloying, desperate love for his boss's daughter, Jennifer Zhaveri, the foreign-returned, educated, free-spirited and beautiful woman he's fancied since college. There is a point where he can go to any lengths to attain Jennifer and pay off his debt, and that's when the high point of the story comes.
When both narratives meet in the rural Aldona, the real fun starts. This, I felt, is the best part of the book. The situations are realistic, the actions of the characters seem natural, and like I mentioned, there is a lot of subtle hilarity, many sit-com type scenes.
Also Rohan is a Goan, so he provides a very visual, sanguine description of Goa, its residents, food, weather and society in general. Again, he makes some succinct observations about people which are hilarious in themselves. I won't name them here- you have to read the book to find out.
As usual, the story is original and well plotted. Characters are well etched out. Language is good and simple without being pedestrian, and the prose quality is high without being verbose or purple. Not many authors can manage that, so hats off to the author for that.
The only point which struck me as a bit odd was the ending, a bit too dark for the otherwise suspense filled but non-gory book. Not that it diminished the appeal of the book for me- no. In fact I like it that in an age of corny happy-ever-after novel endings being popular, Rohan has, again, kept it dark and real. The twist comes as a shock- again a plus for a suspense novel.
I'd also like to point out that Rohan has stuck to churning out quality books in an age where people are deliberately dumbing down language or writing one-dimensional, monotonous stories with bad grammar and languid prose, just because they think it sells.
This is important. RG also writes commercial genre fiction, but he doesn't compromise on anything- language, grammar, characters, plot or prose. Unlike many other 'writers' out there, RG's hard work, his vast reading experience and the practice he must have put to perfect his prose and storytelling skills is laudable.
Another important point the author makes is about consent- a woman's consent, through whatever transpires with Jennifer. This is a pleasant breather from soppy B-town fares where female consent is given little or no consideration- the hero, by brute force alone, can get the woman to bend to his will by imposing his toxic masculinity on her, using his 'love' for her as a convenient excuse. RG shows us the flip side of this mentality, and how not all women are willing to take such crap.
I'd suggest OMG to anyone who loves well written suspense novels and can handle unusual endings.
Plot: Solidify in the conditions of Goa, the character of this hardback is Naveen, a brilliant and bright guy. He was a positive apprentice but his parents resolve not judge in his ability. By the assistance of Altaf Bhai, a strong home gangster he has accomplished his studies and at the present effective in ‘Zaveri ornaments international’. Naveen has to feed in the past the monetary corroborate provided by Altaf Bhai in practice of wealth of Zaveri. Naveen is restive and constantly thinks how to preserve he reimbursement in exchange to Altaf Bhai. On the other side, Kalpesh and Jackie are the acquaintances who are frustrating to make it to a livelihood out of creating practical joke videos. They would like to cook a capture on film which canister stop the verification of every practical joke cartridge on YouTube. They make your mind up to create a horror movie in the ‘Serenity Villa’ at Goa. They take part in instrumented the lot after they encompass to obstruct their shooting and desert the holiday home and instrument behind. They choose to build a horror movie in the ‘Serenity Villa’ at Goa. They produce instrumented the lot while they get to bring to a standstill their shooting and abscond the cottage and instrument behind. Naveen is constantly difficult to effect any mean what time he got the news that Zaveri’s daughter Jessica is open to being their new boss. Accidentally this is the similar Jessica who second-hand to be his crush/love in college. The wicked minded Naveen completed a diagram to kidnap Jessica and to exhaust existence with her he, in addition, asked to kidnap him. This is an abnormal kidnapping somewhere they were kept back in the lush cabin with the complete the amenities. The entertainment detail is this is the unchanged holiday home someplace Kalpesh and Jackie contain instrumented entirely the horror props. Come again? Happens subsequently is rather funny to read.
Will Naveen bright to grow a tenderness of Jessica? What time will Jessica be free? Will Jessica perpetually recognize the conceive behind this plan? Comprehend this hardback to comprehend the answers. My Verdicts: This reserve has every bit of entertainment; romance, humor, mystery and a helpful story. I encompass noticed that the dramatist has an exclusive manner to get in touch with and this makes this sign up an identical amazing read. The humor put by the dramatist is laughable. The lettering is judiciously elected by the author, Kalpesh, Jackie, Vikram, Shabbo, Naaz, Jessica, Naveen, Dexter every and every creature played a most important part to remodel the story. I contemplation this would be a little plain humor book, but the unpredictable close makes it remarkable. I am aching to study the number one charge of the author. This order is an incredibly accomplished select to put off your old day with a chalice of coffee. An entertaining charge which you be supposed to not lose to read.

‘Oh my Goddess’ has got two sub-plots that connects at certain point and travels towards one conclusion. We have three parts in this story. Part one introduces is to each character and their roles and living. In part two, the action rises with story built with seriousness and the third part derives the conclusion with so many unexpected twists.
First plot goes with two mischievous boys from Mumbai, Jackie and Kalpesh. Both beings jobless, earn a mere amount through their prank videos which they unload in the YouTube. But it doesn’t give them the money they expect to make a living and so they finally go with a plan to make one last full length movie. On making the movie hit, they plan to get settles with the money they earn through it.
Naveen, the protagonist of the second plot. He works for a rich firm namely ZAVERI GEMS INTERNATIONAL. Naveen is indebted to a local don Atlaf bhai, who under the order of an underworld don Sudhakar Shetty, has helped Naveen with his studies and job, which is indeed for their own hidden purpose. Naveen has loved Jessica in his college days. He had gone crazy for her just like the rest of the boys, still knowing that he is in no level to match the rich girl. Back now to his present, Naveen comes to know that Zavier’s daughter will take over the business then and her name is Jessica. Naveen prays that she shall not be the same girl, whom he has loved more than his own life.
In part two, the plot takes up a rising action. Kalpesh and Jackie plans for the shoot. As the story is horror, they need a villa which will be perfect for their story and they luckily manage to get it from Perviz. Then they hire two prostitutes to be the actresses. The house is set with properties with the help of a caretaker of the villa and they are all set. Just before the three hours from the start of the shoot, Perviz call them and urge them to leave the house immediately. He pleads them to postpone the shoot for three to four days. The team leave the house, depressed.
Meanwhile with Naveen, the things which he hasn’t dreamt in his worst nightmare happens. The boss girl Jessica is the same on whom he loved in his college days. Now, with her around all the time, he falls for her much more. Naveen finally makes a plan. A plan which will go with the proposal of Atlaf bhai and which will also help him to get closer with Jessica. The plan seems to be readily accepted by Sudhakar Shetty, as two men comes to meet Naveen to know the sketch. As said by Naveen, both him and Jessica are kidnapped and kept as hostiles in a luxurious villa, which is accidentally the same villa left by Jackie and the crew.
Everything goes as per the plan of Naveen and with Naveen all around the time, his care and his protective nature makes Jessica to fall in love with him. With this, Naveen’s plan finally seems to get succeeded. Meanwhile Zavier, with Dexter – the security in-charge and few policemen, makes his attempts to find Jessica. We can see the depth father-daughter relationship with Zavier who is ready to do anything for his princess. Dexter, who from his side collects as much evidences as possible, which he is not ready to say until they get Jessica back safe.
Part three takes its course towards the conclusion with more twists and turns making the tale much more interesting. Kalpesh and Jackie gets into trouble because of the two actresses, who are none but prostitutes, then Naveen and Jessica are released, but Dexter and his family gets into the trouble. Finally, when everything seems to go well, there comes a huge blow which hits the life of each person into different directions. This part holds much significance and it has turned the novel a nail-biting tale.
The author, Rohan Govenkar, gives us a different experience through his novel. Whatever you guess to happen net in the story will be proved wrong every now and then with turn of each chapter. The curiousness given by the plot is justified in the end, the climax of the novel will completely surprise you.

My review: Title: The title of this novel is “Oh My Goddess”. At first when I saw the title I astonished. Generally we say OMG (Oh My God). But here is different Oh My Goddess. Then I thought it might be a mythological story as it was named Oh My Goddess. I liked the title very much as I thought it would be a great chance for me to read a new type of story that could change the thought, the difference between Oh My God and Oh My Goddess and teach me an interesting lesson. So after observing the title I was very interested to read it completely at a very quick time. Then I jumped for reading it with concentration. I rated it 5/5.
Cover photo: Then I looked at the cover photo of this novel. After observing the title there was another thought going on my mind but after looking at the cover photo my thought had been changed. It looked like a comedy story as there were pictured three or four characters on the cover photo really looking like a comedy scene. On the other hand another thought was coming about the story that was the story might be a romance genre. But I liked the cover photo of this novel very much because one couldn’t understand after observing the cover photo what the story would be run until or unless he or she reads the full story. I rated it 4/5.
Story: After that I started reading the story containing the novel. There were three parts. First part, there were two mischievous boys. They were from Mumbai. They were jobless. Their names were- Jackie and Kalpesh. They were thinking how to earn money from a different idea. So they started making prank videos thinking to earn a lot of money in future. They made prank videos and uploaded on YouTube. But their dreams couldn’t be fulfilled to earn huge money from making prank videos and uploading those on YouTube. So they thought another different idea to make huge money. They decided to make a full length movie. It was their last chance to make their dreams fulfil. On the other hand, Naveen completed his studies. Atlaf bhai helped him in case of his studies and getting job. Atlaf bhai had a strong connection with underworld don Sudhakar Shetty. Atlaf bhai helped him to get a job in a rich firm named ZAVERI GEMS INTERNATIONAL LTD where he met his college days crush Jessica. Soon he came to know that Zavier’s daughter would take over the business and her name was Jessica. Second part, Kalpesh and Jackie had already made a plan for shooting their last hope. They decided it would be a horror movie. So they needed a particular horror place for making their dream fulfil. They hired two prostitutes as actresses. They found a villa for shooting with the help of Parviz. They went there for shooting but suddenly due to a circumstance they had to leave the place and stop the shooting. On the other hand, Naveen came to know it was the same girl whom he would love in his college days. He had fallen much more love with her than before college days. He decided to get her back in his life. He made a plan of kidnapping her. He asked help from Atlaf bhai and Sudhakar Shetty. Naveen’s plan had been accepted by them. As per the plan they kidnapped Jessica and kept the same villa where the horror movie by Jakie and Kalpesh was going on. But unfortunately Jakie and his team left the villa already before arriving Jessica there in kidnapped situation.
Third part, Kalpesh and Jakie got into trouble because the two actresses whom they hired were prostitutes. On the other hand, Naveen and Jessica were released. But Dexter and his family were in critical situation. Moreover the third part directed the story towards the conclusion. It is a nice story to be read. I rated it 5/5.
Characters: Characters are characterized here nicely. KALPESH, a boy who shoots prank videos and upload those in YouTube for making huge money. JAKIE, friend of KALPESH who has the same dream what KALPESH has. NAVEEN, a protagonist who has fallen in love with his college day crush. JESSICA, daughter of NAVEEN’S boss who is kidnapped. Atlaf bhai, a person who has a strong connection with an underworld don helps NAVEEN in case his studies and getting job. SUDHAKAR SHETTY, a person who is an underworld don helps NAVEEN to make his kidnapping plan success. I rated the characterization 5\5.
Writing style and grammar: Mr. Rohan Govenkar has written the story well. His writing style is too good. Though there are three plots in the story it will not be difficult to understand all incidents. The story is as simple to understand as it looks. The book is nicely edited also. I haven’t found any grammar mistake. May be I have overlooked a little mistakes. The author has used simple words so that one can understand the story easily. I rated it 4/5. Overall: I rated it 5/5.
It was a nice story. The end of the story was not being expected like this but it was good. Sometimes this proverb goes on “What cannot be cured must be endured.” If you don’t read the full story you can’t understand who the main culprit is. The story is mixed with full of twists and unexpected facts. Readers would fall in love with this book. At the end I would like to thank Mr. Rohan Govenkar for gifting us such a nice book.
"Oh my godess", trust me, these were the final words which escape from my mouth as soon as put the book down. I wonder why I kept it down because I have started rereading it. Well, now you may have realized how much I adore this work. Jesus! This book deserves it.
Oh my Godess!, is one such books which will remain with me till the end. I wonder whether to call it magic or else but I'm spellbound this moment. Penning down this review is like describing the rollercoaster ride this book gave me. This a story of a boy who hails from a middle class family, Naveen and fall for his boss's daughter, Jassica. And another story moves with it which is of Jackie and Kalpesh, who struggles to make their names in the world. Sooner or later, their wishes were granted.
Story begins with hilarious acts or actions done by Jackie which were constantly recorded by Kalpesh on camera. Both friends were travelling to Mumbai, in a hope that they would explore and utilise their talents and would bloom but luck was hard on them. Parallely, Naveen was recently placed with a MNC which deals with monetary and was breathing sign of relief until his happiness was knocked out by local goon.
Story was full of entertaining episodes and drama which we see in movies. Let me sum it up in three words. Entertainment. Entertainment. Entertainment. I have never read any fiction by an Indian author who was capable of making me laugh, stress and scared at a same time. But this book did.
Book has done justification on every part which makes this book worth. Right from the title, which was so fresh and catchy. Book cover was just breathtaking and will drive readers to flaunt this book, like I do these days. Story which will be so fascinating and you would be compelled to read it again. Editing done by Kanishka Gupta and Achala Upendran was again amazing, flawless work.
It is hard to say which portion or character I enjoyed the most. But I really loved to read part of Jackie, Naveen and Dexter. Jackie, whose accent was exactly like a typical Up wala, was the most entertaining character. This particular character is so strong that reader would expect to learn more about him. Naveen, a middle class boy who fancy Jassica, business tycoon daughter and get trapped in a house. He did every possible things which any boy would do for Jassica but he succeeds or not, for that you have to read this book. Naveen life was messy but his brain was too fast to make up everything. I adore him. Dexter, the security head of Zaveri's company, a brainy dude who was one of the most influential character you would read. Damn! This guy nailed it. Each character was developed very delicately and in a different manner from the other.
Plot was amazing and full of suspense, that whatever I guessed, used to go into the bin. So much twists and turns, with amazing imagination of author. Personally enjoyed plots were in the initial chapters where Jackie and Kalpesh were having fun when they enroute. Second was when Naveen and Jassica was trapped and after few days mischievous incidents started happening, it was scary for me too. Then I loved how Dexter uses his brain and his conflicts with sub inspector. There's so much about every page I enjoyed but doing so would make me spoiler here.
Author has done fabulous job, be it story, language and narration. This book is "paisa-wasool". I highly recommend you people.
I would rate it 4/5stars. Now, please excuse me because I'm going back to reading this book. At last I would love to thank author, for sending me a copy and accepting my concerns when review was delayed.
We live in a time when love is often considered as fake, or something which does not last long—in return making it fake. Oh My Goddess by Rohan Govenkar tells the story of Naveen, a nerdy guy working for Zaveri Gems International, an extremist of love, who proves love can make people go into extremes for its sake. The novel begins with the scene of an airport where two carefree boys, Jackie and Kalpesh, perform several pranks and record them for uploading the video on their Youtube channel, giving the book a humorous start. The two are aspiring to make a living by uploading funny videos on Youtube, but their videos fail to get them enough subscriptions. They finally decide to drop the whole idea of making videos if their one last video does not succeed. And this time, they plan to make a full length movie. Parallel to it, there is the other plot which tells the story of Naveen, the protagonist of Oh My Goddess. Naveen is working for a business tycoon named Zaveri, and simultaneously for a local don, Altaf Bhai, who has provided him aides to complete his studies. And thus, Naveen is indebted to this don, and has to make some plan to trick out wealth from Zaveri for him. The trouble begins when Zaveri’s daughter, Jessica Zaveri joins the firm, and turns out she is the girl who Naveen was head over heels in love with in college days. After her arrival, Naveen loses focus from everything else, and ultimately makes a plan to spend some heavenly time with her. Naveen plans kidnapping of Jessica along with himself to spend days with her, unaware of the fact that one of his colleagues, Dexter, a technology expert, is also planning something out-conspiring his plans. Oh My Goddess is paced and engrossing thriller, giving the reader a feel of watching some Bollywood movie like ‘Race’ or its sequel. You cannot predict much about what might happen next while reading it, because most likely your prediction will fall flat. The story is as interesting on its final page as it is on its first, with the witty narration performing the cherry on top. There are several proofreading errors in some places, like a sentence ending without a punctuation mark, or spelling mistakes. Overall, the book is perfect for giving you good time, and pleasure of reading.
The story began with two pranksters, Jackie and Kalpesh shooting a prank video in the airport and leaving the staffs and the air hostess with some headaches and the crowd with a riot of laughter. On the other side, Naveen, who pulled off to the Zaveri’s by the help of Altaf bhai and Sudhakar Shetty is thinking about to return the loan amount with a bang being nostalgic about his college time love, Jessica and his best friend, Rajoo. The story progresses with Naveen making a plan to kidnap Jessica for a hefty ransom while the pranksters were in search of their actress for their movie to be shot at Pervez’s house.
From hiring Shaboo and Naaz as their actress to fit the CCTVs with the help of Ganpat, changing the script as per the situation Kalpesh and Jackie left no stone turned to make their movie into the blockbusters. Naveen made sure about his plan and discussed it with Raghu and Jaggu to implement to with different groups of people in different locations. While Raghu and Jaggu took the responsibility of kidnapping, Bicchu, Thappa and Surya made their stay comfortable as per Naveen’s instruction. Tensed Mr. Ashok Zaveri, security in-charge Dexter and his Battrecko, PI Surendran and SP Vaz were in search of them, getting calls after calls destroying all the plans of Dexter to trace the kidnappers. After thirteen days long stay in the farmhouse, Naveen and Jessica came out from there and what happens to Jackie and Kalpesh’s movie was not something you would imagine in your darkest nightmares.
The author has made sure to keep his reader in a laughter roll while giving them a thrilling ride. The location is set up in Goa made the author made sure to provide each and every detail that will erase the confusion from a reader’s mind. The only turn off is some scenes were narrated separately after the happening which will make you feel like you’re reading a not required extra part. The narration was made in simple language with a crispy editing and nowhere the pace of the story seemed to be disturbed. The name somehow doesn’t fit with the plot and the cover design can be improved. It is a most read for everyone, not going by the genre unless they want to miss a thrilling and exciting story written in the funniest way till their stomach ache.
P.s: This book is provided by the author in exchange for a genuine review.
Woww!! a work of crazy intelligence I must say... Initially when I started reading I thought it was the same old Bollywood romance kinda stuff, but I am glad the plot started changing and I started enjoying... Although at some point I felt the author was dragging it a bit long but all and all it was a fresh story which I would love to see in a motion picture.
The start was very different and interesting where two friends Jackie and Kalpesh try to play pranks on people without the spectators realising to earn a living by uploading these videos thus captured online and how broke they continue to be inspite of all their hardworking efforts to the point that they just plan to give up!
Simultaneously there is the protagonist Naveen who is born in an ordinary Sai baba 'Bhakt' family, everything seems to go fine in his life until he meets one 'altaf bhai' who works for an underworld don. He helps Naveen financially to pursue higher education and live a life he once dreamt with no expectations except one, to conspire him to loot his boss who is a multi-millionaire diamond merchant. Although Naveen is a simple boy he decides to help Altaf bhai to return his favour. But here comes a twist in the plot and the boss' daughter a UK graduate 'Jessica' enters the scene. The only problem here is she is the woman of Naveen's dream ever since they studied in the same college before Jessica left for the UK.
Coming back to Jackie and Kalpesh, these two decide to give one last try to their drowning careers in film making and plan to make a movie on the lines of paranormal activity.
Oh my Goddess is about how Naveen plans an abduction of Jessica along with himself to avoid suspicion as well as spend time with her! And this abduction interferes with Kalpesh and Jackie's plan only to make them famous later...
I am not going to spoil the suspense here but the only part I disliked in the entire book is what happens to Naveen in the end, I wanted a fair ending for him. (Hence only Four stars)
All in all it was really a crazy well written story unlike the other Indian authors I've read!!
I received this book when I won the giveaway and heartfelt thanks to Rohan Govenkar for the signed copy. As you signed, it was a thrilling ride.
This is the first time I am reading one of Mr.Govenkar’s books and I am very happy to have found time to read this.
To be honest, if I saw this book in a shop or a sale, I wouldn’t have gone for it after checking the cover and the description. It gives an air of cheesy romantic flick where the guy and girl and the 'run around the trees' love. How wrong I was.
From the very beginning, there were unexpected twists and surprises. The author succeeded in maintaining the same throughout the book until the very end. I was worried that the author might end up portraying a successful puppy love.
The characterization was really engaging. Every character played a part and was reliable. Usage of colloquial words with the translation was good. Even though, I couldn’t understand one or two things mentioned in the book.
One big question that confused me: Jessica was living in London for 5 years and yet when on emergency she wanted to call 911 (emergency number in the US and Canada) not 112 or 999. Why?
At the end of the read, this is a well-written book with a wonderful storyline that makes you burst into laughter, keep you on the edge and baffle you until the final chapter. It is worth your time and money.
It had been raining when I gently placed the book in my hands, forgetting where I was for hours. I was expecting this book to be run-around-the-trees romance indicating puppy love with ‘Pyaar ka Panchnama’ twists. However, Rohan Govenkar has surprised me with the story in his second novel ‘Oh My Goddess‘ published by Brute Gorilla (An imprint of Frontier India) .
The whole novel is gripping and doesn’t allow you to leave the pages. Rohan has created a need to keep reading until the whole book is over. Yes, its totally “unputdownable” romcom thriller novel.
Interestingly, Rohan weaves the story in such a way that the reader tends to believe that there would be a certain kind of predictable ending. However, therein Rohan does a double – flip and the twists and the turns in the last few chapters actually take the reader getting into the “what’s gonna happen now?” groove.
All the characters are neatly woven and each are given their special timing and character slots. They are all seamlessly built up to contribute to the climax of the story followed by secondary climax. Yes, like I said the story has interesting twists to keep you guessing.
The Verdict: Yes! You gotta buy this gripping book and keep gushing and guessing.
Firstly, I thank Rohan Govenkar for this free giveaway.
This book is a fantastic read. I seriously didn't expect such engaging writing from someone writing his 2nd novel. The only part which needs improvement is the cover design and name (eye catching but still not appropriate for penetrating the Indian market) of the novel.
Right from the start, Rohan starts forming the plot in a very simple manner and introducing characters at the right time and giving them some characteristics which help the readers to visualize them easily. Comical elements have been introduced in between which were great. He starts forming a plot, and then the suspense is pretty dynamic where you really think of many possibilities the mystery may unfold.
The ending was particularly wonderful as it was realistic. It wasn't a typical Bollywood everything sorts out for main character ending, but a nice practical one and he even infused some elements in the last page where Dexter tells Kiara that she would study in England (like Jessica) and live like a princess. I saw a link there.
Not a randomly written book but lots of thought must've gone in it!
PS. Rohan, you should've given some description of the romantic scenes, people like a bit of details. ;D
The story revolves around Naveen who wants to be an overnight billionaire. To fulfill this fantasy he plots a kidnapping and what happens next is a whole together gripping story. A suspenseful plot with two stories running parallel to each other is beautifully handled by the author. The author has weaved each and every emotion beautifully. The characters are unique and believable. The writing style is lively and full of action which adds stars to the wonderful book. Additionally, the rightful amount of humor, suspense makes this book more engrossing. The author has successfully filled his promise of hooking his readers till the end. This book is something which once started is hard to put down until you finish it.
Overall, the book is similar to a cheese burst peppy paneer pizza with the righful amount of paneer squares, red chilies to make it hot and crisp, and an inner layer of cheese to make you feel like heaven on earth in your mouth. Everything is just perfect and hence, it remains my all time favorite. Therefore, it is not wrong to say that the book is by far the best read of mine this year.
Negatives– I didn’t find any, You too won’t. Trust me. !!!
Love and money can make people do strange things. Well here in the book, the lover kidnaps his love in order to woo her. Oh My Goddess is meticulously laid out well written book which has right amount of humor and suspense to keep the readers entertained and hooked till the end.
It is the end which will leave the readers flabbergasted and bleak. The story moves as predicted. Nothing here and there. Everything goes according to the plan or as expected. It is towards the climax that story becomes completely unpredictable and the author ends the book in the most unexpected manner with some surprising twist.
The highlights of the book were its beginning and end. I can't write much about the end without giving away the suspension. It's difficult to comment whether I liked the climax or not but it definitely stunned me and I couldn't take away the credit from the author to write an out of the box unexpected ending.
Review of 'Oh my Goddess'- The good and the the bad in < 100 words each.
Author- Rohan Govenkar
The good- 1.The smart usage of colloquial Konkani and slangs especially popular in Goa like- don't give me cancer' are endearing. 2. The entire plot setup with a jewelry business at its heart and the way it works is something at least I hadn't read about anywhere. 3. The camaraderie between the friends has come to the forefront in an engaging manner.
The bad- 1. The book is a bit long. I personally think that the story could have been wrapped up in a slimmer way. 2. The end felt a bit abrupt. It seemed as if the author wanted to shock the reader, but it somehow felt forced.
MY SUGGESTION- Go for 'Oh my goddess' if you like novels with smart mix of linguistics. HAPPY READING
The amazing book cover and the name of the book simply draw readers' attention. It's a love story, actually a complicated love story of one side lover. Goa is in the background of the story. Naveen is the leading character here, who has just so many dreams to fulfill and the biggest dream is to get his boss's daughter Jessica attracted to him. As in every love story people do crazy things to get love, so as Naveen did. And whatever he did, you will read in the book. And that very incident makes the story kinda funny, kinda romantic and kinda adventurous. Means many flavors in just one book together. The author narrated the story in a very simple and engaging language and style. Enough characters who played vital role in the story and all the characters were just original. Starting was kinda confusing.... As I have read the first 2 chapters twice (I don't know whether you will read it twice or only once), but at the end, I couldn't predict the story, as suspense was there till the end.... Overall....an amazing book, you can spend your weekend reading to...☺
The plot begins like this - Naveen completes his studies and in order to fulfil the favour extended to him for getting educated, he joins hands with Altaf Bhai who in turn had a connection with underworld don Sudhakar Shetty and joins Zaveri International Ltd where he meets his college days crush - Jessica and learns that she is none other than his boss's daughter. Part one introduces is to each character and their roles and living. In part two, the action rises with story built with seriousness and the third part derives the conclusion with so many unexpected twists. The language is simple yet gripping. I simply loved it.
It was fun and fast moving from the start. Ending was also good and fantastic , i never excepted it . The plot and twist was brilliant . Kani book ni pulihora chesaru. When the book was in between , i felt it dragged a lot.. The last 100 pages were more dragged. I thought Naveen was hero to plan such a crazy plan to make Jessica to fall in love. But all his efforts are gone waste..
I want to give 4 star when it was so good. But when i got to the part where it dragged and a few things happened which are unnecessary, anipinchindi abba pulihora chesadu ani..
Rohan did a nice attempt on portraying a story which started with a note on Mature content but was a U/A read really :) . Plots and sub plots were part and parcel of the narrative. Somewhere you will feel that its is dragging but once you finish you find that it was all that needed. Nice flow but end is bit overdone. You don't cheat you powerful boss who is friend with a don and go to spend your holiday in Don's area only. You risk your life...could have been done better.
Funny read. Book equivalent of a Masala Bollywood movie. Got this in the Goodreads giveaway. Thanks for the book Mr. Rohan! And I love collecting bookmarks so thanks for that too! The plot is pretty much what's mentioned in the excerpt. Pick this book up if you want a light read.
Two stories connecting to one. A wonderful book. Nicely written. Good entertainment, amazing story telling. The characterization and plot is superb. Naveen - living an ordinary life ...having an eye on his boss’s daughter Jessica a millionaire. Day by day Naveen's patience was running out and finally he plans for a Kidnap drama.
The kidnap drama leading to an isolated place at Goa. Whether Naveen will be able to win Jessica's heart?
The book is having full of humor , romance, love, suspense, everything. Each chapter is turning out to be interesting and you will be turning the pages with excitement. A nice book and the climax of the book is something interesting.
My review- The novel begins in a very unusual way. It begins with the introduction of two pranksters- Jackie and Kalpesh. They shoot a prank video at the airport leaving all the staffs and crowd dumbstruck. The introductory scene made me burst into laughter. And,at this point of the novel I realized that this novel is not going to be like any other contemporary novels. It is going to be different. And,I was right in my opinion.
The story goes on. We are introduced to Naveen- the main protagonist of the novel. His story goes on something like this- he is a middle class guy,who has just completed his studies. He joins hands with Altaf Bhai,to compensate the favour done to him by Altaf Bhai. He works for Zaveri International Ltd,and luckily he meets his college day's crush -Jessica, over there. Jessica happens to be his boss's daughter. And being a middle class guy,who is struggling to survive,Naveen finds it difficult to express his feelings for Jessica,to Jessica. But as we have time and again heard-' Everything is fair in love and war'; Naveen will end up doing something which will make us believe this. His actions would surely make you laugh, but at the same time it will leave you thrilled . This is for the first time I am reading a love story like this because general love stories start in a whole different way. This novel is a work of great creative imagination.
Jackie and Kalpesh are the representative of today's youth. They try to be different by not following the mass. They choose to pursue their passions. But the novel starts with their failure as a vlogger/prankster. This is indicative of the fact that if you choose to be different, then you ought to be ready to struggle more as you will be facing failure ten times more than the average failure rate. It is all about being patient, and holding on.
As the story begins in a very unique way,so does the ending. This novel for me ,proved to be a rollercoaster ride-full of adventures. Sometimes,it will make you roar with laughter, sometimes it will leave you thrilled to the core. So,take a moment to read this book. Rohan Govenkar won't disappoint you. He will make you forget your problems, and make you scream 'Oh my Goddess' , instead of traditional 'Oh my God'.
My rating-4/5
