A series of close, intense, often brief collaborations have marked the course of twentieth-century art. One occurred in the summer of 1905 when André Derain and Henri Matisse worked together in Collioure, a French Mediterranean fishing port close by the Pyrénées. Painting side by side for much of the summer, the two artists advanced the style that would be dubbed "fauvism" at that year's Salon d'Automne.

Like many artists who emigrate from the provinces to an artistic center like Paris, Miró felt the need to assimilate the most advanced ideas of the capital while retaining his provincial identity.
