entertaining personal account of a 17 year old New Bedford boy -- Daniel Weston Hall -- who ships out for the Pacific whaling grounds aboard the whaling ship Condor, only to desert after being abused by the Captain in the arctic wastes of Eastern Siberia. Hall survives, spends a winter in a Russian village (Oudskoi), kills bears and wolves, is treated by a Tongusc medicine man, and is rescued thanks to the efforts of his father back in Massachusetts.

This book is absolutely astounding! Wonderful story about a very brave young man who joined the crew of a whaling ship at 13 years of age. This is a young adult reader, but I found it very enjoyable.
