As much as I enjoyed Wells' "Magick Charm", I think I enjoyed Free Spirit even more. I love the twins, of course, but I really like how so many other characters added to the overall storyline. Cherry is a total scene-stealer, and she made me laugh out loud on many occasions. And I liked the development of Ted through both books; Wells definitely gave him more dimension here, even though Rachel still thinks he's sort of a douche.
One of my favorite parts of the book was that I didn't know where the book was ultimately going to end up. I'm not prepared to give any spoilers away, but I could really feel the conflict between the characters at the end of the book. The action was intense without being overpowering, and I enjoyed that aspect of the story very much.
And honestly...New Orleans is a fantastic setting for a story, especially one that deals with the paranomal. Reading this sequel made me want to go back to NOLA in the worst way imaginable. I was singing "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?" for a week afterward. I sort of wish Voodoo Pete's was a real place so I could visit!
In short, this book is another triumph for Wells! Her snarky writing style always tickles my funny bone, and I can't wait to see what she writes next!

Free Spirit is the second in the New Orleans Magick series; I was able to read it fine without having read the first book in the series.
Rachel and her twin sister Janie, as well as Janie's boyfriend Ryan, live together in a home in New Orleans. They both work for a local paper. Janie writes news stories, while Rachel covers the "paranormal" type beat of the city.
Rachel is approached by Cherry, a local ghost hunter, asking Rachel to accompany her to Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 to do some hunting. Though Cherry is clearly not a professional (like the ones on TV lol), Rachel has wanted to try a hunt at this famous cemetery and agrees to go. Imagine her surprise when Ted, her ex-boyfriend, now Cherry's boyfriend, joins them.
While at the cemetery, Rachel connects with a spirit who has unfinished business.
Besides this, Rachel's bit of a bitch friend and boss, Jacqueline, has announced that her husband has kicked her out of their wealthy home and wants a divorce. Janie, being the nice person she is, invites Jacqueline to stay with them. Jacqueline, being a bit of a wealthy brat, proceeds to make major changes to the home including construction - which seems to upset a spirit in the house.
Is the spirit in the house the one from the cemetery? Did she follow Rachel home? Or is it another spirit that has a connection to the house?
I enjoyed this book, especially for this time of the year. The interaction between the twin sisters is fun to read, and typical for siblings. Snarky one minute, protective the next. Ryan, the boyfriend, seemed almost too good to be true.
What took away a bit from the story is that you had two characters that you hated - Jacqueline, the do whatever she wants friend/boss of Rachel's, as well as Cherry, the obnoxiously loud ghost hunter who seemed to have no tact whatsoever. It might have taken a bit away from the story to have two people who grated on your nerves.
All in all, a fun paranormal read that is nice for any rainy weekend afternoon.

I thoroughly enjoyed book one of this series, Magick Charm. This second book centers on carefree twin Rachel who accidentally leads a ghost home from one of the New Orleans cemeteries following a seance. This is just the start of her troubles, however, and by the end of the book she is wallowing in ghost troubles, unwanted house guest troubles, overzealous fans and more. This book is filled with fun, adventure and spooky stuff! A well written, humorous read.

Another good read from this author.
Good characters, good story line and kept my interest throughout the entire book. Looking forward to reading more books from this author!
