“Prolonged hours of sitting in Ardha Padmasana (Half Lotus Pose) resulted in an excruciating pain in my right hip. It was so severe I thought at first I might need a hip replacement....Two minutes. That’s what it took to fix my hip pain with Lee Albert's method. I can still remember saying, “It’s like a miracle! I simply can’t believe that the pain is gone.” - Peggy Cappy, popular TV host of PBS Yoga Programming Do you suffer from painful muscular conditions that hold you back – on and off the mat? It is nothing short of magic." - Charlotte, Yoga teacher and fibromyalgia sufferer "Lee Albert's counterintuitive magic, slackening instead of stretching - as is the case with Chinese puzzles - has gotten me through the fallout of international travel, moving, and various athletic injuries time and time again." - DE, NYC
In “Yoga for Pain Relief: A new approach to an ancient practice,” Lee Albert NMT provides a clear and concise guide for modifying a yoga practice to alleviate pain by bringing the muscles into balance. Albert explains how lifestyles and certain yoga poses create imbalances which lead to poor posture and most chronic pain conditions. Albert explains why some muscles benefit more from strengthening and others need more stretching. Illustrated sequences of yoga postures (asanas) are provided.
This book assumes some basic knowledge of yoga and does not provide detailed instructions on the poses. Brand new beginners would benefit from seeking a qualified instructor or consulting books or videos for a thorough introduction to yoga practice. For yoga teachers and intermediate practitioners, no supplementation would be needed.
I am a certified Kripalu yoga teacher who has had the opportunity to experience a private session and participate in Integrated Positional Therapy training with Lee Albert. He is a very knowledgeable, compassionate, and modest teacher. Albert’s Integrated Positional Therapy is life- changing and has been a key influence in my yoga teaching and practice. I highly recommend his books, training opportunities, and one on one sessions.
A very good book on Yoga, that has helped me understand better my lower back pain, which has increased after my practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. I still have not practiced the sequences provided in the book for the condition, I read it all thru, it was all so mesmerizing. The information he provides is clear, makes sense, and fills in some gaps I had regarding my Yoga background as teacher, and some questions I still had left after my Restorative Yoga course. I will put the postures he presents to practice, and if all works as he says, this may be incorporated to my regular routine, even after I come into balance.
I liked the insight from this book, which in a nutshell is: you need to stretch the front side of your body, because you spend most of your time sitting, which compresses the front side and stretches the back side. Until your body is balanced (i.e. pain free) you should not stretch your back side at all, and should only stretch the front side. This means do backbends and twists, and do not do forward bends.
What I didn't like was that he essentially dismisses all people into the same bucket, giving only two workouts to follow, one for the lower body and one for the upper body.
Not a bad book, had some interesting insight into pain relief and yoga practice, and some good suggestions and sequences to help with upper and lower stresses. The issue I think is coming up with the non 'professional' opinion of what is actually short and long/over stretched muscles when both feel tight, so seeing someone to let you know which is which I think would be of benefit before trying to sort it out yourself. Good for both practitioner and master.
I've had the good fortune to train with Lee Albert and to experience the benefits of his approach to yoga. By incorporating his simple suggestions into my practice and breaks during work, I was able to alleviate my back pain and say goodbye to my chiropractor. Because most pain is caused by muscle imbalances, almost anyone can benefit from reading this book and following the instructions.
This is a very well written book and clearly explains where our aches and pains come from. I have been following much of his guidance including hydration, stretching and proper yoga poses to improve my imbalances, since March and feel much better!
This book was very helpful for reducing or eliminating many painful conditions. As someone who has practiced yoga for years, it was very beneficial to learn the poses that would aggravate different conditions.
The book has very valuable information about how the body works and what our imbalances are. It shows how to balance these by stretching and strengthening. There's also some information about breathing.
Another great book by Lee Albert. 1st - don't do yoga poses that will aggravate your issues. This is almost identical to his other book on pain relief, so if you'd prefer to yoga, just get this one.
Five stars. Incredibly informative. Will surely be very valuable for the rest of my days. Have to return to the library, but already ordered my own copy on Amazon.
