Title (italicize): I Wonder Why Dinosaurs
Author: Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries
Illustrator (if separate from author):
Genre: Theme(s): Toy or Moveable book
Opening line/sentence (type directly from text): "When did the dinosaurs live?"
Brief Book Summary (2-3 sentences in your own words):
I Wonder Why Dinosaurs is perfect for the student that is very curious about the world around them and what came before them. This book has many interesting facts about dinosaurs such as what food dinosaurs ate, how they fought, and how we know what we do about dinosaurs if they lived so long go.
Professional Recommendation/Review #1 (cut & paste):
Phyllis J. Perry (Children's Literature)
"Dinosaurs have unending appeal, and this latest offering by Judy Allen encourages very young readers to be part of the action through uncovering the fascinating answers to questions asked in this interactive book. Basic questions such as are lizard's dinosaurs? Or did dinosaurs eat grass? Are posed, and by turning a half-page, or flap, answers are revealed. Turning the flaps also changes the illustrated scene by adding action and details to the lively, colorful illustrations. Using a question/answer format, Dinosaurs is an 18-page book organized around eight topics: How to say dinosaur names; When did the dinosaurs live?; Food; Fighting back; Big and small; Babies; What happened to the dinosaurs?; and How do we know about dinosaurs? The book concludes with a simple index. While the book offers only the most basic information, the format and the exceptional illustrations will definitely appeal to the youngest readers."
Professional Recommendation/Review #2 (cut & paste):
Lisa Larremore (The Lorgnette - Heart of Texas Reviews (Vol. 21, No. 2)
"This is a wonderful book about dinosaurs in a simplified format. One page asks the reader a question, and then he/she can turn the flap to see the answer. It also has a pronunciation guide for the dinosaur names. The pictures really help with understanding the text."
Response to Two Professional Reviews (3-4 sentences in your own words):
I really enjoyed the first professional review as it described the text in depth and captured the appeal of this interactive book. With the many questions asked in this professional review, it intrigues the reader to pick up the book and find out the answers by flipping the flap on each page in this interactive book. As for the second review, this review is short and sweet and to the point. While it doesn't describe all that the book as to offer in as much detail as the first professional review did, it is a good short review that simply tells readers what they can expect to find in this book.
Evaluation of Literary Elements (3-4 sentences in your own words):
This book is more of an informational, non-fiction book than a constant story that is told. However, my favorite part of this book is that on each page, there is a moveable flap in which three questions are asked on the front, and then when the child flips the flap on the page, underneath is the answer to each consecutive question. I think this is a great way to engage learners because children have endless questions, so but having this extra page for answered questions, it taps into the child's endless stream of curiosity.
Consideration of Instructional Application (3-4 sentences in your own words):
This book is probably most applicable in a 3rd grade setting because it has some very difficult words in it and is not a direct story, so it might be hard to follow for a child who is recently learning to read. In terms of applying this book to a classroom setting, this book could be paired with a research project about dinosaurs in which children have to make some sort of portfolio or poster about which facts about dinosaurs that they have learned.
