This historical novel describes the most shameful event of the 18th. century North America. It is the little known story of the first settlers on this continent, deported by the English from their homeland of Acadia, now Nova Scotia. The author identifies one family surviving the misadvantures of damnation as exiles.
What an incredible book depicting the history of the Cajuns and their journey from France and England to the U.S. via Nova Scotia. I "came across" this book at a restaurant gift shop in Lafayette, LA several years ago. I was drawn to it by the cover and the fact that I am married to a cajun from Ville Platte. I learned so much from this book! This is a story that needs to be told. I would love to see this book made into a movie. Clint Eastwood would do an incredible job bringing this story to screen. It is a part of history that needs to be known! I loved it so much that I bought a copy for each of my children, because they did not grow up in Louisiana, but they need to know this history. There is so much that we don't know about the sufferings of so many of our ancestors as they fought to make a new life in this country in a most difficult time in history. Highly recommend!!!
This is an amazing story! It's is historical fiction - the story of the Acadians that were exiled from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755. There were 13,000 residents that were set adrift in boats... you have to read it. It's a little difficult to follow because the fiction part (following the author's ancestors) with factual current day information.
Not that this is a spoiler... this is Raylean's ancestors. She's Canadian!
