Good News According to Jeremiah

I have loved this book since I was a little girl, all emo and feeling the suffering of the world in my small self. Over the years I've trudged through it, having forgotten how much of the book is parched and awful-feeling. However, a theme that resounds through many chapters like a very quiet background rhythm is the refrain from God, "I see and I know." Two of the most comforting, or sometimes intimidating, statements ever (depending on WHAT He sees and knows). Either way, though, it's a reminder of His sovereignty. Nobody else sees and knows like He does. I imagine it must have been a comfort to Jeremiah, sunk into his muddy pit or speaking to the jeering crowds. He was not alone. We are NEVER alone. I am never alone.

How could even one good thing come from war and suffering?
Israel judged, exiled, yet still serving gods that harm and kill.
Jeremiah, at God’s word calling them, yet so unheard.
Nations swarming through the land executing God’s command:
“Show My people life without my protection. Drive them out
From their home. Remove their joy. I’ll allow you to destroy.
But they will not disappear. I still love. And I’m still near.
And though they linger far too long, some will turn and see their wrong.
Some will ache for me again. They, My remnant, will begin
Their repentance, and I’ll show mercy, tenderness. I know
All my plans for them: They’re bright! I will bring them hope, delight.
I’ll secure them with a strong promise. Yes! They’ll all belong
In My hand, and I will write Love into their hearts and minds.
No more sorrow. No more death. They’ll be safe, content, and blessed.
Through their weeping, I’ll provide Myself: Good News that will abide.”
