Taking responsibility is a daunting task but can Nickels do it?

Ninja Nickles and the Problem with Pickles: A Rhyming Story about Personal Responsibility for Children Ages 4-8 by Leah Cupps & illustrated by Roberta Tomarchio was a cute rhyming action story that was focused on a ninja dog named Nickels. He really wanted some pickles so he waited to get them, but an accident occurred and he had to make a decision that would shape his moral compass. Will he point to good or twirl to bad?

I liked the theme of the story and the way that it flowed overall. The fact that it’s from the dog’s perspective makes it fun because children can relate more to animals than people most times. I also liked the sequence of events for Nickels' mission and his actions afterwards.

I loved the illustrations. Nickels reminds me of the Cheetos guy haha, maybe they can go on missions together one day! I liked the layout of the images to words, one side words with the image on the other. It was well balanced and gave a great addition to the story. I liked the style of the art, with it being like it’s painted and having remnants of the paint stroke on both sides of the pages.

Although it was a cute story, there were some things that felt a little off. Sometimes the rhythm of the rhyme felt a little off, but other times it was perfect. Also, the climax felt a little too quickly resolved, like Nickels was more important than Lincoln. Maybe consequences for both would balance it out as that’s a part of taking responsibility, too.

This would be great for emerging and early readers, 4-8 yrs. There were some challenging words here and there, as well as the word count being a bit higher, but with assistance, it can be accomplished. On the other hand, it is also a great book for parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, friends, and family to enjoy listening to or reading together.

Ninja Nickels and the Problem with Pickles is a cute children's story with a good message.
Nickles (yes, it's spelled differently than on the cover) is a dog who sneaks around his house like a ninja at night when his family is asleep in their beds. One night, Nickles decides to take a jar of pickles to snack on. But the jar slips and shatters on the floor, making a mess. Nickles hides as Lincoln and his mom appear in the kitchen, and Lincoln starts to take the blame, even though he's not at fault. Will Nickles come to his rescue and admit his wrong?
This is a cute story. I think kids will find it entertaining and funny, and parents will like the message it instills, which is to take responsibility for your actions and do what is right. Spill some milk on the table? Admit to it and clean it up. Accidentally break a jar of pickles? Tell an adult and get help cleaning it up. It's a good way for kids to learn that accidents do happen, and it's okay, but don't try to hide it or lie about it. Ask for help and make things right.
The rhyming scheme is delightful and easy to read. The illustrations are fun and bring the story to life. And kids will enjoy reading about Ninja Nickels and his hijinks.

Nickles is an athletic little dog who works hard to perfect his skateboarding moves. One night while the rest of the family is asleep, Nickles decides he wants some pickles, but instead of a juicy snack, he ends up with a mess. Nickles must find a way to make things right before someone else is blamed for his mistake.

I love the themes in this book—honesty, responsibility, and making good choices. Nickles is a great character to showcase these qualities without getting too preachy. The illustrations are really fun, and in general, the rhymes are well-crafted and effective. Unfortunately, this book uses a few cheap rhymes, and there are a few instances of incorrect modifiers (common problems among poetic works), but other than annoying someone who reads and reviews children's books, they don't really damage the story. I might tweak a few of the lines before reading this book to my students (because I refuse to use "glee" in a sentence that doesn't involve cheerleaders), but I think the kiddos will enjoy it.

Thank you to Leah Cupps and BookSirens for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

Ninja Nickels and the Problem with Pickles is a entertaining tale for young readers by Leah Cupps. I loved it and enjoyed how it teaches little ones the lesson of responsibility in a fun way. I thought it was funny and had rhyming lines that made it easy to flow.

Ninja Nickels and the Problem with Pickles is beautifully and vibrantly illustrated by the talented artist, Roberta Tomarchio. The pictures are a perfect addition to the story that will keep little eyes engaged all throughout.

Ninja Nickels and the Problem with Pickles will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. Readers between the ages of four and eight will enjoy this one.

I received a soft cover copy of Ninja Nickels and the Problem with Pickles from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Ninja Nickels and the Problem With Pickles by Leah Cupps is a cute story about a little dog that marauds as a ninja at nighttime when everyone is asleep. But as Nickels prowls his home territory on his skateboard whilst doing his ninja moves he comes across one of his favorite snacks…pickles!
This children’s book is fun and also has a moral to the story attached to Ninja’s decision of whether to tell the truth about his actions with the pickles or let his human friend take the blame.
I had a fun time reading this with my kids. My boys especially were excited to read it because of the ninja aspect. It also made for a good discussion after reading on the importance of taking responsibility for yours actions. I’m looking forward to book two!

A really sweet book about doing the right thing - this would be ideal for ages 5+ and make a great talking point about doing the right thing. I loved the illustrations and the fact it rhymes always makes for a great read-aloud.

In terms of the images, I like the combination of full page spreads and framed images to immerse the reader and then to move the story on. I think this will really appeal to the boys in particular as the story is quite silly and light-hearted.

My only criticism is I think there could perhaps be more humour in the poetry to reflect the images. The illustrations are very funny and sweet but the story isn't necessarily laugh-out-loud. Still a very enjoyable book which I think children would enjoy reading time and time again.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My Thoughts:
This story was born out of a conversation with the author’s middle child Lincoln. She has three children and topics like taking responsibility for you actions often come up. She wanted to create a story with Lincoln that was fun and silly, but also left the readers with a little spark of a life lesson which I feel she did it.
The kids loved Nickles the dog skating around the house I like that Nickles after hiding when something broke he felt bad that Lincoln was getting into trouble and came out and took responsibility. A fun book with a get lesson

The illustrated children's book tells a rhyming tale about personal responsibility. When Nickel's family goes to bed, he gets a craving for pickles. He accidentally drops the bottle and someone gets blamed. Will Nickels be able to tell the truth?

The book was a cute and quick read. The drawings were well done and very colorful. Little readers will have a blast reading the story and seeing if Nickels takes responsibility for his actions.

The grandbabies and I give this book a full five stars!!
They loved the beautiful illustrations and the cute story. I loved the illustrations and the message it delivered. In a very cute way it explained to them that we have to take responsibility for our actions and not let others get in trouble for something we did. Can’t wait to read them more books from @leahcuppsauthor
