非常好的一本历史著作,把阿贡国家实验室和芝大的关系讲地很明白,从早期的Met Lab脱离出来,由于政府二战的核武项目得到长足发展,到二战以后的失落,可能是所有big science都遇到过的问题:我为什么存在?公众为何支持?阿贡特别的地方在于它脱胎于一所私立大学,但是又要面向所有科学团体(起码是中西部)提供科学服务。在历史上有很别扭的3方共管时期:AEC/DoE,AMU/AUA,以及芝大。最后反而是在危机的时候(财务)依赖智慧的大学领导人(UoC的第一位女校长Gray)才得以理顺了关系。写得很流畅清晰。
