I read this simplified version (the one I read is actually a Heinemann ELT elementary version adapted by Peter Hodson-10,800 words) to see if I would recommend it for my Japanese university students studying English. It turned out to be a very good read! The story takes place on a remote island in Alaska. It's about a family who finds their own "Garden of Eden" and then experience their own conflicts with promises, temptations, and the possible consequences of giving into temptation. I was impressed that both external conflicts and internal conflicts could be provided in this simplified version. I think I'll look for the original version by James Vance Marshall to read as well.
