Lawrence Morgan, a 32-year-old explorer and writer, recently returned to Britain after living for twelve months among the Arabs of the Ouled Nail tribe in their remote home amid the arid mountains that fringe the Northern Sahara.
In this fascinating book he relates his strange experiences among these proud, independent desert nomads from whose tents come the most famous dancing girls of all Africa - the beautiful, mysterious, fabulous Dancers of the Ouled Nail.
A good story, beautifully written. The author is a better guest than most anthropologists and as a result got better stories and more accurate information. He practiced all the good rules of approaching people from another culture: 1. He didn't pretend to know anything, he kept an open mind. 2. He didn't go anywhere or do anything he was told not to. Ever. 3. He accepted every invitation he received no matter who it was from. 4. He treated his hosts with respect and listened very carefully to the things they told them so he could get it right. And 5. When he gave his opinion he let you know it was his opinion and not the absolute truth.
