Governor Johnson was most polite and helpful when, in 1733 the frigate Anne arrived in Savannah with General Oglethorpe and his company of settlers. Here is the first major novel about the first planned colony in America. Francis Van Wyck Mason (November 11, 1901 – August 28, 1978, Bermuda) was an American historian and novelist. He had a long and prolific career as a writer spanning 50 years and including 65 published novels.
As always with F. Van Wyck Mason's books, I learned a little more about American history and, believe it or not, ENJOYED it. This is an adventure story about the development of Savannah, Georgia and the gritty life of those pioneers. The author uses personal stories involving different characters to really flesh out the lifestyle of that time. He includes a man who was captured as a young boy and raised by his indian captors, a military man reporting to Oglethorpe, and the two women involved with them. Other characters are developed around these four men and women to create a very enjoyable and exciting book that teaches you a lot of history and about the diplomacy between the English and Indians along the way. There are parts of the book that drag a little, but just skim through those parts because this book is worth reading.
