A German “mechanical” picture book. (Historical picture book, from 1896.) The forward tells children to be careful with it. This book has 10 pictures and 10 spreads, but can only see 5 at a time. (5 pages w/illus).
The picture changes when the tab is pulled down: 4 rectangular parts of the picture slide beneath the new one. Ex: man riding horse (Der Sonntagsreiter) moves to on ground and the horse swtitches so far away. The trees and house make up the setting and help with illusion of motion. Written in verse, 3 stanzas, each with 4 lines. I like the zoo (Affenhaus) where the monkeys take outer clothes and possessions from man.
Worthwhile to hunt down if interested in historical kid lit or in mechanical books.
