A very readable study of the early plays in relation to the medieval philosophy of love. I was blown away last December by the author’s first book ‘The Shakespearean Ethic’, which explores the value-system underlying the Bard’s writing, brilliantly elucidating some puzzling aspects of the plays. I sent off immediately for Vyvyan’s other two books, the first of which, this one, just reached the top of the TBR pile. Equally engrossing and highly recommended for anyone with any interest in or curiosity about Shakespeare’s take on the world, but start with the first book. I’m looking forward to the third coming off the pile in about 4 months’ time: Shakespeare and Platonic beauty.
