Brian Doyle's first collected essays, alongside side pieces from his father, a longtime Catholic-newspaper editor. Gentle, sweet, life-affirming, big-hearted, all of them.
From Brian about his young daughter: "Many times I've pointed out a wonder of the world--a hawk, an orange, my wife--and Lilly has immediately and firmly identified it as a duck. She also does this when we read. We read the same four books every night, all of which feature the moon in a heroic capacity."

I was looking for more writing by Brian Doyle and decided to read his first published book. It is a collection of short pieces by Brian and his father Jim. I enjoy Brian's writing and this book did not disappoint. Published many years before his first novel, his writing style is recognizable and enjoyable to me. I did not read all of his father's writing.
