Gentle, old-fashioned humor, e.g. parodies of Sherlock Holmes, Ivanhoe (A Medieval Hole in One in which the festivities begin with the winding of a hobo) to name a couple; affectionate parodies of melodramas. Amusng discursions on Homer. Narrative of small town Ontario life (e.g. The Marine Excursion of the Knights of Pythias). You don't have to be Canadian to enjoy this, but it helps, eh? Few guffaws like what Ring Lardner elicits, but none of the malice either. Lots of almost-LOLs. HAving read in this book many times I can recount many of the stories til cows come home. Great bedside book.
