ABC History Mystery by Chicago Historical Society is an easy ABC book based on objects owned by the Chicago Historical Society, now renamed the Chicago History Museum. It is easy because a portion of each object is shown before you turn each page to reveal the whole object and its printed name.

Objects shown include: alphabet blocks, bike, camera, doll, ice skates, juke box, keys, letter, newspaper, (Wizard of) Oz, quilts, shoes, toys, and zither. Objects with special Chicago connections include the first Chicago fire engine, Wrigley's chewing gum, the famous "Dewey defeats Truman" newspaper headline, Kukla and Ollie puppets, and toys like Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoys and Tootsietoys. At the back of the book are descriptions of the signification of the objects shown. Only upper case letters are shown. A few objects may be hard to identify for younger children, such as the X made in the beams of the Hancock Building, or the zither.

The illustrations are clear photographs.

This would be good for those interested in Chicago history. The lack of lower case letters makes it less useful as an alphabet book.

For ages 3 and up, alphabet, Chicago history, social studies, and fans of the Chicago History Museum.
