This Lecture Notebook is designed to be used for a ten-week course on Introduction to Database Management. Even though the notebook was developed to be used with FUNDAMENTALS OF DATABASE SYSTEMS by Elmasri/Navathe (3rd edition, 1999, Benjamin Cummings), the Notebook can be used with many other textbooks. The emphasis of this course is the practical application of database theory to real-world problems and database systems. The key features of this Notebook Database design using entity-relationship modeling, Translation techniques of entity relationship diagrams into relational schemas, Database integrity, Basics of relational algebra and update propagation, Database application development, and Data manipulation using Access 2000 and SQL in Oracle 8. In the fourth edition of this Notebook [the author has] corrected typos from the third edition and reflected the third edition of Elmasri and Navathe's book. The fourth edition also updated the contents in several chapters. Appendices were also revised for improved readability and the new version of Access, which was updated for Access 2000. The author has used the Notebook for many years in his Database Management course at the College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University.
