In the middle of the country and the middle of the continent, a Great Lakes state and a great Midwestern center, Michigan is the sum of America past, present, and future--a state in which yesterday’s history and tomorrow’s promise endlessly vie for pride of place. This book offers visions of Michigan in all its glory, past and present--from Native American settlements to trading outposts, from farming riches to vacation splendors, from its artistic heritage to its automotive muscle. Here images of yesterday and today appear side by side--state landmarks and architecture, capitol buildings and icons of pop culture--bringing to life the transformations of time and history, and the marvels that persist. Photographs and postcards, brochures and advertisements document the history of Michigan as it lives in pictures and memory, a stalwart of the American heartland.
Every now and then it is nice, if not necessary, to flip through a book such as this and appreciate Michigan. This is by no means an exhaustive catalog of Michigan's treasures, but provides a nice sampling of Michigan's notable destinations and landmarks while providing a tuch of Michigan history. As an Alma College grad, I was a little disappointed that the Highland Festival did not get a mention.
There is a ton of love for the U.P., and perhaps rightfully so. One could use this book as a reference while planning a tour of the U.P. For my part, I have added a couple of sites to my list of places to visit, such as the Big Spring in Manistique.
Bits of the history were quite interesting and quick to read. If there is a theme to draw from Domm's narratives, it is that the logging industry (among others) nearly devastated the beauty of Michigan's wilderness, which continues to recover from the environmental costs of harvests over a hundred years ago. I have often imagined hiking up a bluff in the Great Plains and looking across a vast herd of bison. After reading about Michigan's dense forests that used to occupy our the land where our farms and cities now exist, I have a new pioneering fantasy to ponder, and a deeper devotion to this state.
Very interesting book. Lots of pictures along with stories of so many familiar Michigan sights. Sea shell city, castle rock and call of the wild museum are just a few of the places that brought back memories of travelling with our family when we were kids. Great information for anyone who wants to know more about our state.
