I read /Invisible Hand: The Marijuana Business/, by Roger Warner:

The book starts off in boring fashion with interviews with DEA agents and a Colombian mayor, but shifts in to high gear when discussing The Company, Don Steinberg and Pete Wagner's marijuana smuggling and distribution business, where Don and partners were booking more than $100 million profit in cash (annually) from going big in the late 70s.

This sure was a fun book to read! The smugglers' stories are interesting, but most interesting were the later chapters which detail the rise of domestic marijuana cultivation, especially the introduction of C. indica to North American smokers. Mr. Warner notes the decline in marijuana popularity since its peak in the late 70's and speculates that it is on its way to becoming a drug mainly for the poor. The sections discussing government policy and law enforcement efforts were alternately boring and entertaining.
