Rate this book
As the title of the book suggests, this work is one of the first compilations of the battles that the British fought over the course of one century, to consolidate its hold over the sub- continent, The time period covered in this book ranges from 1746 - 1849. Battles with the French, Tipu Sultan, Sikhs, Mughals, and more are noticed in this book. The 15 battles described are St. Thome, Kaveripak, Plassey, Kondur, Biderra, Undwah Nala, Baksar, Porto Novo, Assaye, Laswari, Bharatpur, Firuzshahar, Sobraon, Chillanwala, and Gujrat. The author, a very respectful name in the realm of Indian historical scholarship and research, often adopts a moral tone, and does not hesitate to censure the British for using un-chivalrous tactics during some of the described battles (especially during the battle of Plassey). This book is a reprint of the 1914 edition, and has 5 charts and battle-plans, as well as a map of India.
