Don't Eat the Bluebonnets is wonderful story that demonstrates the importance of protecting nature and self control. Sue Ellen is mesmerized by the bluebonnets, so much so that she ignores the warnings from her friends and eats up the entire field. When the bluebonnets fail to come back, everyone is disappointed. Sue Ellen is determined to make it right and won't give up until the field is covered with bluebonnets once more. Children will relate to Sue Ellen's impulse behavior, and parents can use this story to discuss the consequences of one's actions. The illustrations are beautifully done and add the the humor of the story. I highly recommend this book; young readers will surely want to hear this story again and again!
I like when I can learn something from reading a picture book to kids. With this book, I learned about a flower that doesn't grow where I live...bluebonnets.
The main character is Sue Ellen (a cow). All of Sue Ellen's friends tell her she shouldn't eat the bluebonnets. There is even a sign reminding her. But poor Sue Ellen just can't resist. And that's when the trouble begins. The bluebonnets don't grow back. No more bluebonnets! Sue Ellen needed to find a way to bring them back. I won't tell the how the story ends, but the ending is satisfying.
I like all the characters in this book and the story is well-written. As a nature lover, I appreciate the message it sends.
So much fun! Sue Ellen just loves bluebonnets. LOVES them! But her friends warn her not to eat the bluebonnets or they won't come back. Sue Ellen listens. . .for a while. Finally, she can't control herself and eats ALL of the bluebonnets in the field. Oops! Sue Ellen's friends are right--once bluebonnets are gone, they're gone. The next year, when no bluebonnets grow, Sue Ellen does everything she can to try to fix things and bring bluebonnets back. This adorable book teaches kids about caring for and respecting their natural world!
Children, both young and young-at-heart will fall in love with Sue Ellen. Her quirky personality and sweetness overshadow her naughty deeds, especially when she tries to undo the wrong she’s done. But who can blame her, when those sweet-smelling bluebonnets are as tasty as they smell! Giggles and laughter will abound at story time and children will beg to have Leventhal’s story read over and over again.
Sue Ellen is a cow with a mind of her own. So, when everyone tells her not to eat the bluebonnets, she goes ahead and does it anyway. When the bluebonnets don’t grow back, she realizes she's made a huge mistake. This is a super-adorable story about one's actions having consequences that kids of all ages can relate to. This NEW edition of Ellen Leventhal's book is absolutely adorable. Young readers will love the sassy, know-it-all attitude of Sue Ellen the cow who insists on eating the bluebonnets. Teachers and parents will appreciate Sue Ellen's efforts, with the help of friends, to make amends.
Overall a sweet story with delightful illustrations!
I love the sassy and sweet Sue Ellen, especially when she tries to resist eating the bluebonnets! As a New Yorker, I didn't know much about bluebonnets, but reading this book makes me want to visit Texas! The fun language and vibrant illustrations make this book a winner.
Sue Ellen can't help but eat the bluebonnets even though she is warned that they won't come back. This relatable story shows readers young and old that actions have consequences and is sure to have your young ones giggling!
Two Sentence Review: I love this story about self-control because who hasn't wanted to eat "the entire ____ in one sitting"? I thought Sue Ellen had great agency, and I adored the exuberant artwork!

This is a story about a cow named Sue Ellen who loves the taste of bluebonnets. They are everywhere and she is tempted by them every spring. Max the longhorn tells her that if she eats them, they will not be back next season. As time goes on, she is thinking about them more and more and is really tempted. Some of the other cows try to make her forget about the bluebonnets and keep reminding her about what will happen if she does. Much to the displeasure of the other cows, Sue Ellen gives in and eats the entire bluebonnet patch. In time, she realizes what she has done is a mistake and she cannot take it back. Sue Ellen tries everything she can think of to help the bluebonnets come back for the next season. She modifies the hay to look like bluebonnets and this does not work. She makes paper bluebonnets and they all blow away during a thunderstorm. She is racing against the clock trying to figure out a way for the bluebonnets to come back. As a last resort, Sue Ellen finds some seeds in the barn and plants them. Sue Ellen makes a new please don’t eat the bluebonnet sign to remind others the consequences of what will happen. In the end, the cows return to the pasture and see that the bluebonnets have returned. What attracted me to this book are the illustrations. On the front cover is a hilarious picture of a cow that looks like it has mad cow disease or something and it really did make me chuckle. The picture of Sue Ellen fat and happy after eating the bluebonnets is hilarious as well. I liked this book and I think all children, even some adults will like it as well. We all can learn from the message in this book, learning from our mistakes.
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. You follow a cow name Sue Ellen who wants to eat the bluebonnets so bad. She is very tempted too and gets told from her best friend not to eat them. Max the Longhorn has a sign and reminds them DO NOT EAT THE BLUEBONNETS! But does Sue Ellen listen of course not, it kind of reminded me of my son being as he does not like to listen.
Well when Sue Ellen doesn't listen guess what she has to pay for her actions. The bluebonnets do not grow back and now Sue Ellen misses them. She puts her mind to use and starts thinking of ways to bring the bluebonnets back. My son thought her painting pictures and putting them in the ground was funny being as they were not real flowers.
When I asked K what is favorite part was and he said the end, because she got them to come back.
I liked how there was a lesson to be learned in this book. You need to listen and not do something because your actions has consequences. But if you use your mind you can solve the problem you created. Wonderful book for the older I would say ages 5 on up children.
A delightful story about a cow who is craving the tasty bluebonnets and doesn't know how to stop herself! Texans will love it, but anyone else as well.
I love everything about this book. Great story and illustrations, and I had no idea what bluebonnets even were before reading this, so thanks to author and illustrator for making me smarter :)
