When Loretta dropped her armload of firewood on the hearth, a mysterious tube fell from between the logs. It was a leafcutter bee nest. Loretta took it back out to the woodpile and watched as holes appeared. But where were the bees? She found more holes appearing in leaves on her rose bushes. And even some of the rose petals. But where were the bees? Leafcutter bees are more efficient than honey bees for pollinating gardens. The book includes instructions for building a nest that may lure wild bees to your yard.
Bees in Loretta’s Bonnet is a delightful story that is educational but also entertaining. It teaches children about bees, well the non-stinging type. I’m allergic to bees so these type of bees sound right up my alley for my garden. Loretta sure loves her insects. In this book she finds a bee nest but no bees. She is on the hunt to find them. Lois once again incorporates learning into her story. There are instructions for creating your own Leafcutter bee nest and lure bees to your garden to allow bees to hatch. The colourful illustrations bring the story to life as we journey along with Loretta and learn about nature. The story is for children 3 – 8 years. My son and his sons are going to try this out now that they had read this story.

Young Loretta is bringing an armful of firewood into the house when a round tube with holes drops out of the center of the logs. She is told that it is a leafcutter bee nest and that leafcutter bees are better than honey bees for pollinating plants. Loretta is told to put the nest back in the woodpile outside so the bees can find it. Loretta keeps an eye on the bee nest and discovers more holes appearing in it but cannot see any bees.
As the weather warms up outside, she also notices that there are holes in the leaves of the rose bushes, but she still sees no bees. It comes as a complete surprise to Loretta when she finally discovers where the bees have gotten to.
I absolutely adored this book and feel that it is the best one that I have read so far by this author. The illustrations were beautiful and really helped to bring the story to life. Although this book was geared for children, I walked away with knowledge about leafcutter bees that I did not previously know. I had no idea that they were better than honey bees for pollinating gardens. I loved that the author included instructions for building your own leafcutter bees’ nest so that you can attract more bees to your yard. I am anxious to build one with my young nieces and put them in our yards. A must read for all ages!
Loretta lives with her parents and helps out around the house, one of her chores is to collect firewood from the woodpile and take it inside to heat their home during the cold, winter months, but one day while she is doing this, she finds a strange tube when it falls out of her armful of wood. She asked what it was and found out that it was a nest for leafcutter bees, so she returned it to the woodpile and checked on it when the weather warmed up.
As she watches the nest, she sees round holes appearing, she knows that it is the bees leaving the nest, but she cannot find the bees anywhere, she also notices more holes in the leaves of her families rose plants, but there is still no sign of the bees, where could they all be?
This is a charming tale which talks about the importance of leafcutter bees and how to attract them to your own garden, just like Loretta is trying to do.

Bees In Loretta’s Bonnet is the second book in the Loretta’s Insects series by Lois Wickstrom. It is an interesting, educational, and entertaining illustrated children’s storybook, with an engaging story that even has a project step-by-step guide to building a bee nest, to attract wild bees to your garden, at the end. This is a fun story, and we get to learn all about wild bees along the way. The story is cute, while inspiring children to learn while they read. I enjoyed reading the story with my grandson, but the illustrations weren’t up to the standard of most of her other books that we’ve read, so they didn’t hold his attention like others have. Still, an interesting read, though. Happy reading!
What a wonderful, entertaining, and educational story this is. I have never been a fan of bees because I have been stung many times, but this book did provide me with knowledge to help appreciate bees and what they do for our environment. The author does such an excellent job teaching kids about bees and pollination. There are even instructions at the end of the book that tell how to make a bee nest to attract wild bees into your yard. Not only does this instruct children but it’s a great way for their parents to get involved in helping them learn. The illustrations were as amazing as all her books are. Please share this book with your kids.
Loretta loves exploring her world. When she was helping to collect firewood, she discovered a mysterious rolled-up leaf. When her mother explained it was a nest for leafcutter bees, Loretta wanted to learn more! As the seasons change, Loretta follows the progress of the bees to learn all she can.
This book is adventurous and informational. It is a good lesson on the life cycle of leafcutter bees and what they do for our environment. My kids were engaged in the story the entire time. The illustrations are bright and fun. There is even a cute activity included at the end! If you have an insect-loving kid, this story is for you.
This is a nice book that shows young children that bees are not something to be afraid of and that they will help your garden grow. Young Loretta finds out a lot about bees and how they help to pollenate the plants in the garden. She learns about how the bees grow in the different seasons and what the bees nest look like. Nice to see the way the parents show and teach Loretta about bees, she is able to learn as she is encouraged to be curious and to enjoy nature. It was also nice to see a section at the end of the book showing children how they can make nests for the bees themselves. It is an easy step by step guide with pictures.
Bees in Loretta’s Bonnet by Lois Wickstrom is a children’s book that is fun and informational for all ages! This book like many of Lois's books, aims to teach children about bees (leafcutter bees, more specifically). As always, the illustrations are brilliant, vibrant and really help to bring the explanations to life. Lois has a way of writing books that portray observations of your surrounding and how to handle situations that may occur. It also shows children the importance to have compassion towards insects in general. This is great learning tool that shows the different situations from a child’s point of view.
Bees in Loretta’s Bonnet (Loretta’s Insects) by Lois Wickstrom 5 Stars
The thing that I love the most about this author’s books is that you will always learn something. I always knew about wasps, yellow jackets and honey bees. Now I know about leafcutter bees. I learned that they are better at pollinating gardens. You are never too old to learn something new. Loretta learns all about these bees as well. The book is filled with colourful illustrations and nifty instructions on how to build a bees nest. Bees are so valuable to our environment so I find these instructions very cool
Bees in Loretta's Bonnet (Loretta's Insects) by Lois Wickstrom. I love this author. Her books are always very informative and fun. This is the story of Loretta who goes to get firewood and finds a nest but thinks its a toy. She later finds out it a nest for Leaf cutter bees so she puts it back and in the spring she finds the bees in it. She tries to learn as much as she can about them and even learns how to attract them and help them survive. This is such a cute, informational book that would make a great gift for the little one in your life.
As always a great educational read from this author! I really enjoy reading her books as they are such great short stories that are full of great information for children. I always love the activities she includes at the end of the books and in the case of this one it was how to make a bees nest. I think there are some great talking points in this book for children and would make a great addition to schools if they are doing a topic which includes learning about bees. Another great children’s book from this author!
Wonderful and informative fun as we learn about bee's in the eyes of Loretta. As Loretta is trying to get some wood for her family from the woodpile, Loretta notices something unique in between the wood. Loretta learns about bee's and how they can help benefit her garden in the spring and summertime.
Fun story, very good illustrations and engaging for any age! Highly recommended!
Once again Lois Wickstrom impressed me with another cute children's story. Not only was it entertaining, but also educational. I learned something new and my 4 year old granddaughter is now interested in bees. We plan to make the project that is at the end of the book. I remember having a favorite author as a child and I believe Lois Wickstrom is my granddaughter's. I definitely recommend you picking this book up for your child or grandchild.
Loretta does it again! Loretta goes out to get firewood and finds a small item she thinks is a toy. She finds out that it is a nest for Leaf Cutter bees. She puts it back and when spring arrives, she finds evidence of the bees in her garden. At the end of the story, there are directions on how to make your own bee nest to attract solitary bees to your own garden. Loretta's inquisitiveness helps us all learn more about the world around us!
My kids and I ( 6 and 8 years old) really enjoy reading books by Lois Wickstrom. Bees in Loretta’s Bonnet was a great addition to our kindle collection. I always enjoy learning from this author in the form of a fun storyline. Tonight’s theme was obviously bees. While it was great for our home library, I think it would be a good addition to any elementary school class as well. I really enjoyed the illustrations too but my FAVORITE part is the activity included after the story itself.
A captivating narrative, Bees In Loretta's Bonnet written by Lois Wickstrom and illustrated by Francie Mion introduces its young readers to the importance of protecting leafcutter bees. The visuals boast a beautiful traditional style. Not only is the tale enchanting, but it even provides an educational DIY project, allowing kids to make a bee nest in their own garden! This heartwarming story of conservation makes a perfect story to share with my grandchild.
As a bee lover, I can truly appreciate this book for sharing so much useful information. I mean, the way the author made it was a clever read for me as an adult and easy for kids to understand as well. I’m beyond impressed with what and how my son was able to pick up on the importance. The characters were easy to love and understand as well. My 7 and 3 year old boys enjoyed this story as much as I did and I’m 35, LOL! Great read for the family to enjoy.
This story was fun, I had my two nieces take turns reading it out loud. They each thought it was a fun and educational. They both found it easy to read their ages are 10 and 8. Reading this together made them both want to learn about different kinds of bees so it truly turned into a wonderful learning adventure also. My favorite part is the activity in the back it elevated the learning and I love getting to have fun and teach my nieces new things. Five stars all the way and highly recommend.
This book was a lot of fun and lead to a lot of conversations about bee’s and what they do for us. Those conversations lead to more research and learning about bees. Since I am allergic to bee’s we wont get a chance to make a beehive for our backyard, that this book provided instructions for, but it was great to learn how to do! I love how this author’s books always lead to better conversations for us. I would recommend!
I found this story to be entertaining and informative. Miss Loretta gets a lesson in bee habitats. The story is fun, age appropriate. It gives just enough information to not overwhelm but to make the child want to learn more. My grandson will be studying gardening and insects. This book will be going in that unit with hopes it will encourage him to learn more. Engaging, fun and a great read.
I absolutely love Lois Wickstrom's scientifically-based books. They are so informative yet she creatively and seamlessly weaves a story with the facts. I also enjoy the illustrations. They are unique and eccentric. It's also neat how at the end Wickstrom provides readers instructions on creating their own paper tubes for bees. 100% recommend this book.
This is a cute story with a nice message. It give some good information about the leaf cutter bees for an adult and younger child. The illustrations are nice but I wish they were a little clearer since I knew nothing about these bees and wanted closer looks. In the back it gives information about making a home for these bees with every day products. This is a good story as well as informative.
I thought this book was really cute! I think my favorite part is the way that Loretta was so inclined to find out more about the bees. The author did great at showing us a new character and also making sure we learned something as well. I also love the tutorial at the end of the book.
Loretta’s bonnet flew away. She didn’t notice till her mom told her. Then she found the bonnet. The bees had nested there. Fast paced book. I read to my baby she paid attention.
