As part of Multicultural Book Day, I am reviewing A Marvelous Mexican Misunderstanding by Evi Triantafyllides and Nefeli Malie.
Disclosure: I received an electronic copy of this book from the author in order to facilitate this review.
What happens when an older sister taunts her little brother, building his anticipation of the Day of The Dead in completely the wrong direction?
In "A Marvellous Mexican Misunderstanding", author Evi Triantafyllides does a great job of exposing readers to this wonderful celebration. It actually inspired me to go and learn more about it.
The dark humour of the story is juxtaposed against Nefeli Malie's bright, bold, colourful illustrations which provide a strong sense of culture.
Readers will identify with universal themes of sibling bickering and fear of death, whilst also learning about a unique festival and thoughtful way of honouring ancestors.
Some quick facts and translations at the end of the book provide great information and a springboard to inspire further investigation.
This is the first of what is to be a series of multicultural books from Worldwide Buddies.

I liked it, but I felt the tone was off a bit. The main conflict in the book is faced with all the force of a "guess I'll die" meme.
