This book is a loose adaptation of the Trojan War narrative, set in Switzerland around the world wars period. I found the prose style incredibly confusing, due to the fact the woman (one of the main characters of the novel) wasn't given a name, and the switching in perspectives between the two villages. Even with the mythic framework in my mind, I still struggled to follow the plot, characters, and understand what was going on. While the abstract nature of this prose adds some amount of beauty to the author's style, it merely acted as a barrier for me.
i would’ve given it a higher rating if the beginning wasn’t so complicated to understand which made it boring, but the ending. oh. my. god. that ending dude. the whole monologue that Firmin had with himself and the way he was prepared to leave everything behind for Frieda just for him to die for it. I genuinely believe that he didn’t mean any harm don’t get me wrong he did kidnap someone and i’m not trying to defend him or excuse his actions but i believe that he became a better person at the end
