Been wading into the world of photography of late and eagerly brushing up on the classics; Koudelka is a very recent discovery and I was struck by his pretty raw/realistic style, loved it; a lot of his work is freely available online at the internet archive, go check them out!
I have a small paperback version with the intro in Spanish not French. 66 striking black & white photos, mostly of gypsies and of the 1968 Czech Uprising with some from his years of wandering in Europe.
For 19 years no one knew who had taken the photos of the uprising. Koudelka did not want reprisals against his family.
His work is now known in the US (he had an exhibit at MOMA) but I didn't know of him until I saw this little book on a sale table.
These types of books are usually good for overviews of a photographer's work but I have to say this one was really disappointing and do not recommend it. If you want to see some of Koudelka's work I would recommend Invasion 68.
